Using Atomos Shogun as external monitor instead of Red Touch?

Hi guys and girls,

Great to be part of this community, been saving up my pennies per se in the piggy bank for my Scarlet W + add ons.

Currently shoot on a FS700R + Atomos Shogun Flame.

Making the switch to RED in a few months time (very excited) and wanted to know if it was possible to SDI/HDMI from the IO expander to my Flame for a monitor?

I wasn't sure that you could as the interface on the red touch wouldn't be replicated onto the shogun, e.g. would it just work as external monitor and not have all the necessary frame rate/time base/settings as per you would see on the red touch?

Thanks guys

Lewis

You can use an SDI or HDMI output for you primary interface.
You just need to make sure you have a control surface such as a sidekick or side handle to make selections.
An IOS device with foolcontrol would be a convenient addition as well.

Massively apprite the reply, I'm totally new to the red scene, been fascinated with owning one for years but as the time gets closer I've spun up a lot of questions haha.

Im a bit unclear, if i was to plug in the shogun what would be received on the screen, would it have the red user interface the same as you would see it on the red touch? I thought you would see the shogun interface if I'm honest.

So if i was to have the sidekick / side handle to make selections, they wouldn't appear on the screen, the screen would be facilitated as a field monitor of sorts and all the selections would still be made via the 2 units that you mention?

At the cost of the side handle / side kick it probably works out better that I sell the shogun and put the money towards the red touch if I'm honest as I would have to have the IO expander which is $1900 + the side kick at $1150 which is a touch over $3000.

May as well sell the shogun and get the touch to be honest, as I would have to have a monitor arm to support / rig up it up anyway.

You can have the full menu interface on if you want, just something you need to set up initially. You need a piece of RED hardware to get through the first user agreement and to turn on WiFi if you are planning on using FoolControl.

Honestly, I went with just a 702 for almost 8 months and no RED monitor. I decided to grab one of the old 5" touch monitors from someone online and get the adapters and I have yet to put the 702 back on the camera. It did help me offset the purchases though by waiting (note I did buy a Sidekick for the camera as I don't like touch-only control systems).

How do you go about linking up the 702 to the RED? Does it require the IO expander?

Anything else?

Can you elaborate on the setup / to have the red touch interface on the atomos? Bit baffled! Ta!

i hope someone will relay to this guy that he could buy a Hydrogen base module and by the time he gets his camera, should know how it and foolcontrol will work as a camera monitor. If it is not as capable as hoped, he can rescind his Hydrogen order.

Depending on the environment I use an Odyssey 7q+ for an on-camera monitor with a RED 4.7" to control the camera if I'm indoors, or an Atomos Shogun Flame if I'm outdoors (the 1500 nits sure are handy). It's much more efficient for me to have an on-site recording for playback instead of always relying on my brain for playback incase my AC needs to change something between shots.

You can set in the camera to output the RED menus/goalposts/tools onto any monitor so you can see your settings, but like Todd said to be sure you can control your camera through some other device.

And yes you'd need some sort of sdi/hdmi out from the brain to the monitor, so an IO expander, jetpack, etc. is required for any monitor out.

Thats fab mate thanks a lot for the advice.

So presuming I had the V lock / IO exp I could pop into the red settings via a sidekick or side handle and adjust to export the menu / settings and tools etc to a external monitor e.g. the shogun?

Another quick one - if I didn't have the red touch monitor, and just the red side handle for example, how would you visually navigate through the menu to select to export to exterior monitor as the side handle doesn't have a LCD. I can understand with the sidekick as it has a little panel I presume for switching toggle modes etc.

Forgive my naivety just a whole new scene to me. the FS700 simple menu has all I've seen for ages haha.

Just to be clear, you can use any monitor with the SDI out including the shogun, but you will never be able to CONTROL the Red from this monitor.

If you want to control the camera from a touchscreen monitor, it must be a RED monitor.
Alternately you can use an iPhone + Fool control as a separate interface to all the settings, or you can use the side kick or side handle.

personally I find the RED monitor far easier to use and prefer it. We use a RED monitor + and SDI monitor on most jobs...but you have multiple options depending on the project.
