Hey fellas, so I'm working on building my rig and am looking at all of the options. I was thinking of just getting the Red Touch, but then I thought if I need a monitor for other cameras such as the Alexa, F3, or SLR I'm totally out of luck with the Red Touch. It's a monitor that can only be used with the Epic or Scarlet, and I love how easy the Red Touch is to use, but if I'm spending that much I want to be able use it with other cameras. I'm just wondering how easy it is to use a DP6 or Marshall SDI/HDMI monitor with the Epic/Scarlet that has a sidehandle or Redmote. Thanks.

Hi Jason,

Short answer is it works fine. Connect an HD-SDI or HDMI monitor and use the side handle or RedMote to control.

Long answer is it's a tradeoff as using the touchscreen is by far the easiest and fastest way to alter settings.

I have an Epic and a Scarlet and decided to just get one of each accesory, which means one of them always uses a sidehandle/EVF/monitor and the other uses the touchscreen. When you have them side by side in different configurations you quickly see just how great the touchscreen is.

Awesome, thanks for the quick reply. I read through other posts and saw that once you activate to view menus on the monitor, it's pretty easy to use the sidehandle or redmote to adjust options. But the ease of the Touch is pretty amazing to have.

So just to be sure...You can take a scarlet fresh from the factory, with the side handle and an HDMI monitor, and have access to the menus? I only ask because this was the question on another post and it was never clearly stated that this was possible... I don't want to have to find someone with a touchscreen after I get it to change the settings the first time... Thanks!

Simple answer is the hdmi monitor is not by default enabled for menu's, so you can't just use a hdmi without touchpad by default. You can download a setting that enables the hdmi for menu's, but that is patch dependent and requires an extra step. The 5 inch touchpad rules, I love mine, and will get another soon (i also have a bunch of hdmi monitors which i don't like using for various reasons, mainly i don't like having a bunch of different power cords on my camera). my advice to new red users is to get a touchpad, get's you out of learning stage problems which sometimes plague new redusers that are hacking their components together on the cheap.

Thanks Patrick! So with the downloaded setting (where can I find that by the way?), I will not need to come knocking on your door for one of your touchscreens? lol...I'd love to have a touchscreen, but I'm still trying to figure out how to swing a bare minimum package as it is... Do I load that patch the same way I'd do a firmware update?

I had to find a Red Monitor (not touch) to be able to see the menus and move them to the HDMI output. I now you can use the presets, but that gave me some trouble, as you need a formatted SSD for that (they can only be formatted through the menu). Now however all works fine for me, and I don't miss the touch screen yet. I'm sure it's better and easier, but the menus work just fine with the handle or redmote - far better than Red One or any other camera I've used for that matter.
