Hey everyone!
I'm about to embark on a VFX supervisor job and we're considering our INT. CAR options. Given the sheer amount of the scenes we're filming in cars, greenscreen is likely NOT an option (out of our budget), so we're looking into using LED panels for both displaying background plates and for projecting realistic reflections onto the car. I have an idea of what I *want* to do, but I'd love to hear the musings of our userbase here - what has your experience been?
In my head (and in a perfect world) this is what I'm hoping for:
1.) Shoot the background plates. For the sake of this thread, we'll assume they were shot properly and from ALL the angles we need.
2.) Stabilize the background plates. Removing that "floating car" look.
3.) Bring our picture car to a stage that has a gimbal of some kind to move/shake the car. (is there such a thing? something programmable, even, to match our turns with the background plates?)
4.) Hard-mount our cameras to the car body itself - careful not to create any angles that we couldn't recreate with a moving car in the wild. Also, hopefully, giving the camera a HINT of shake from the gimbal.
5.) Set up the LED panels in the background of our shots (and the reflection LEDs).
6.) Shoot the thing.
My question(s) is... has anyone here shot this method? Is there such a thing as a stage with programmable car gimbals (and how loud are they)? We're filming in NYC, but I'd be curious where you've gone and what your methods have been, regardless of where you've shot!
Thanks all,
Chad
