the chart above has adjustment shims for PL mount?
does this mean you need to mount PLs in the same manner as before, meaning a trip to the lens technician?

It's written above very clear and also the shims are not for RED PL mount:

"Mounting Instructions

a) Remove 8 screws from the inner ring of the RED camera mount and
carefully remove the mount

b) Carefully place shims (3) and flange (2a) on the camera front instead
of the original mount. Make sure the shims are not folded and the screw
holes are accessible.

c) Fix eight screws as shown in the drawing

d) Screw cover ring (2b) onto the flange ring

e) Add position screw (6) as shown in the drawing far left."

During installation process try to be very careful and don't make any wrong step that something

breaks the camera, otherwise it would void warranty and you pay for it (not RED, nor even the 3rd party).

How much is this mount? Sorry to ask, but I could find the price in their website.

In their website states the following:

*****
The replacement of the whole RED front is not needed anymore. Due the fact that only the original RED mount needs to be replaced by
the P+S Technik IMS, no warranty limitations will be damaged. If needed the IMS can also be re-exchanged to the original RED One mount. The thermically characteristics of the RED One front will stay the same after this IMS
modification. ****

Is it true that the Warranty wouldn't be void?

I have 2 nice Voiglander Aespherical lenses that mount on my Voighlander Bessa R2 which I think they are M-bayonnete. Anybody knows if those would work with the P+S mount?

Thanks,

IC

Muffiny, it IS NOT TRUE that the warranty wouldn't be voided. RED's new policy is anything that removes the adjustable portion of the PL mount voids the warranty - thus even the NEW version of IMS voids it.

It is not a tenable position, in my opinion (and many others) either in terms of customer relations, or legally. But it is what the big fuss is about with the Birger mount and since the issue is exactly the same for you guys that want IMS, you might want to join in the effort to get the policy reversed.

i don't see anything about the red "i" cables in their instructions ?

Thanks Mike. I thought it would void the warranty but they state that in the website so I was confused.

I am an avid follower and reservation holder of the Birger and already joined the effort in those threads and wrote my opinion. On the personal level I really appreciate your efforts on this issue as it is helping everyone who wants to have another mount that it is not the RED PL and REd Nikon.

Thanks,

IC

The differences between Birger and IMS is that IMS is not "electrically" or even not at all in any sense of an "electronically driven mount".

It's a pure MANUAL control lens mount and not any electronic part or a touch is involved directly!!!

Collimation of the mount or of the lenses involved was always an issue with any rental house as we all know well.

"Collimate your lens as you can (or we do it for you with a prece increase) and we would ALSO have collimated mount for you"

that was always a credo with any worldwide CINE-lens rental house.

It's written above very clear and also the shims are not for RED PL mount:

I was actually reffering to the manual in post #6 in the notes section right
next to #1 pl mount its says shims are available, which makes me think you need shims for PL, this might not be the case it just looks that way

Paul

It's a P+S Technik's design and those are the people at the moment the most advanced and experienced to work with a different cine mounts in the industry.

What I can say more, not even RED camera designres are having expertise or experience like P+S Technik on different cine camera mounts.

It's about a pure industry FACT.

P+S Technik are not designing cine cameras (they are assembing some).

Also don't forget that they are placed in a HEART of Bayern, München/Ottobrunn, GERMANY where these sort of industry

has a long and deep ROOTS (ARRI, MovieTech Dolly ARCO, Panther GMBH, etc,... just to name a few).

P+S Technik are the world wide known and Academy awarded experts in editional cine camera MOUNTS or special mini skater dollies.

I really prefer the RED way of adjusting backfocus...

Gunleik,

about the collimation as you like it but also don't forget those fatcs:

"The Interchangeable Mount System will allow you to use:

- all available IMS Mounts from P+S Technik,

- optical viewfinder with B4 mount (coming soon)

- optical viewfinder with PL mount (coming end of this year)

- Field Collimator (coming end of this year)"

Btw, Dalsa 4K Origin's Optical Viewfinder is made by P+S Technik.

Then with Electronic VievFinder and IMS PL mount Optical ViewFiner together RED will be only camera system with both finder available at the same time.

It could be a sort of Binocular ViewFinder that consists EVF and OVF.

Isn't it amazing?

how do you adjust F-Stops when you use Canon EF lens ??

how do you adjust F-Stops when you use Canon EF lens ??

I use Canon 40D to adjust F-stop, then swap lens from 40D to "dumb" EOS IMS for RED.

This was described by Andy Lesniak that developed his own Canon EF mount for RED.
