Yes, I know I could ask this in a Mac forum, but I wanted to know of any apps/utils that users here found useful.

My attention was caught by a list of recently updated apps here http://bit.ly/Apps___ Some look useful. There's a few more here http://bit.ly/9eoZZA

Thoughts/suggestions? :wink5:

For starters I'd recommend Flip4Mac (enables reading of Windows Media files in QT), VLC (which plays just about any file format you throw at it) and for Windows the BEST app of them all Clip Cache (which remembers every bit of text I copied all the way back to when I installed it in 2005!).

I've never understood why some of the better apps aren't simply bought up (or stolen!) by Apple or Microsoft and integrated into their OSs. ClipCache is a prime example. I fondly remember some brilliant widgets I had on System 7  that did things that Snow Leopard still doesn't do.

Cheers guys! That looks very useful. If only we could likewise scribble notes directly on to a film negative! I've found a couple more

RedLine for Spotlight "R3D files are not supported by Spotlight on Mac OS X natively, but the Pomfort R3D Spotlight Plugin fills this gap and provides the metadata from REDline to the Spotlight search index"

MPEG Streamclip Used this on PCs. A neat video converter that's particularly useful for converting HDV material.

Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTime® components!

As for a clipboard extender, I found a site reviewing several here, and decided to go with CopyPaste Pro

Big fan of Wave Agent for BWF management. Available for both Mac and PC from www.sounddevices.com

Wow. Really nice. Not sure when I'd personally use it (being a ProTools junkie) but since it's free. I had to hunt around a bit for the info page http://www.sounddevices.com/products/waveagent.htm

Forgot to mention Appzapper for quickly geting rid of apps you realise you don't really want! Or want to re-install from scratch.

Careful with Perian – switch it off before editing in FCP, we've experienced some issues there.

Perian causes codec issues... stay away. Especially an issue if your using Kona 3.

VLC player will take care of playing formats that Perian ported into QT.

You can deactivate it in the system controls.

I don't see an option to deactivate, only remove. A shame to do away with it:

• MS-MPEG4 v1 & v2
• DivX
• 3ivx
• H.264
• Flash Video
• Flash Screen Video
• VP6
• H263I
• VP3
• HuffYUV and ffvhuff
• Indeo 1, 2 & 5
• MPEG-1, 2 & 4 Video (in supported formats)
• Fraps (up to v4)
• Windows Media Audio v1 & v2
• Flash ADPCM
• Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska)
• MPEG Layer I and II audio
• DTS Coherent Acoustics audio
• Snow wavelet video
• DosBox video
• Nellymoser ASAO audio
• libavformat, from the ffmpeg project. along with AVIImporter.component:
• AVI file format
• FLV file format
• NUV file format
• libmatroska, along with matroska-qt.component:
• MKV file format
• Subtitles:
• (Advanced) SubStation Alpha
• SRT
• SAMI
• VobSub
• liba52, via A52Codec:
• AC3 audio

Here's the response from my editor friend who recommended Perlan to me:

"Strange, I’ve never had a single problem with Perian, then again I don’t use a Kona card. It’s incredibly handy for opening Flash files in QuickTime then exporting out as QuickTime format for editing in FCP."

Maybe some Final Cut users would be interested in my iPhone app for controlling Final Cut.

See signature.

Do you have a specific example of what goes wrong? Something I can try and duplicate on my system.

I run Perian and a Kona3, and haven't noticed any Perian problems.
