Jeff, this is probably directed at you more than anyone else but posting here in case others find it useful. Thanks in advance for any info you've got on this. And anyone else, we appreciate the help.

We're having a heck of a time with USB 3.0 drives mounting. We have two types of USB 3 drives in-house:
  • LaCie Porsche 3TB USB 3.0 (P9233)
  • Seagate 3TB USB 3.0 (STBV3000100)
We get two different sets of results on three different platforms:
  • MacBook Pro w/ Retina both drives will mount, eject, re-mount with no reboot required. Perfect.
  • Windows 7 and Windows 8 custom-built Maingear Xeon PC's drives cannot mount unless we reboot. Onboard USB mobo ports.
  • 2009 8-core and 2012 12-core Mac Pro's running OS X 10.8.1., 10.8.2, and 10.8.3 drives will not mount unless we reboot. We are running LaCie USB 3.0 PCI Express Cards (130977) in all of the Macs.
Any recommendations? We'd really like to get our USB 3 drives all mounting and re-mounting as-good-as they do on our MacBook Pro w/ Retina. Very frustrated with this. Other hardware recommendations are fine too. Alternate PCI cards, for example. Thanks!

In Windows, go to the device manager and scan for new hardware. That often works. USB - particularly under Windows - is a finnicky bitch when you have had a system running for a while with a lot of connects/disconnects on your USB ports. Over time, the registry fills up with entries for USB Devices and can no longer properly read them. I don't deal with Apple much anymore but I know there are similar problems.

Lacie USB3 seems only to work properly with Lacie drives, whilst Caldigit seems to be the USB3 interface of choice, at least on Mac.

I've been having some trouble with my usb3 card too, It seems to occasionally work. I have a Lacie Pci-e card, I've checked the logs and it seems to be generating a lot of errors. Could be the latest driver, I've been using the one from April-May2012 for a while until last month when Lacie released a new one. Hasn't really been working well since the update.

We've noticed the same issue. We've submitted a support ticket to Lacie.

Hehe.. Somehow I missed this one the first time around.

While I haven't really used any of the USB3 products you've listed here. I have found that LaCie's drivers and software support in general, especially on the Mac, is usually quite lacking. I don't mind their drives so much, but if it's a host adapter with drivers, forget about it...

FYI - Lacie's Reply:

Thank you for providing detailed description of the issue. Having checked our internal support channel it appears there is currently an active issue in regards to USB3.0 cards and inability to detect Rugged USB3/Thunderbolt units on plug in. (Detects OK after restart).
While it can certainly suggest a driver issue we cannot confirm it until our development team can replicate and confirm the issue. I will endeavor to update you as soon as I have more information on this matter.

We have no issue when connecting FireWire 800 + USB3 Lacie Rugged's in the system - it only seems to be the USB3 + Thunderbolt Lacie Rugged drives that cause issues.
