Hi,

we accidentally formated a 500 gb firewire hdd which was at the time the only backup of our media.

I tried several data recovery tools like "data rescue 3" or stellar phoenix, but non was able to locate any .r3d files on the drive. The drive was freshly formatted and then two cards from our EPIC were transfered on them. The tools only found some old movs and jpegs but no .r3d files.

So i thought maybe red undead maybe our last resort, though I'm afraid it might actually write stuff to the drive instead of just reading the damaged files off it. We still consider bringing the drive in to a data emergency center, and so don't want to damage it further. The manual of red undead gives no information if the tools works non-invasive.

Does anyone know something?

I'm currenty trying to make an exact copy of the drive using the sudo dd command under osx and will try it out on the cloned drive later on. Still I'm nervous. Does anyone else have any other suggestions on how to retrieve the data? Will redundead work on a simply quick formatted hfs harddrive like this? I think the other tools didnt find anything because they dont know the exact header-code of the epic .r3d files and even though "data rescue3" claims it knows r3d files (red one), I suppose the files generated by the EPIC are slightly different since in the changelog of redundead it says it has been updated to work with epic footage.

This is super urgent, we're on a extremly tight deadline here ..

REDundead will find the R3D files if they still exist.

Dont be afraid to use REDundead on that drive and send the .r3d to another drive.

You'll want to read from the Red drives/cards to a larger volume fat32 formatted drive when using Redundead, for best results, and redundead can only search/locate R3D files on the red media that haven't been over-written, and you probably should also login as the admin before running Redundead.

If you already recorded or transferred large amounts of red data to the red drive after formatting it, I'm not sure how much of the previous R3D material can be recovered.

Hm just to clarify again:

it is not a red drive but a 500 gb seagate hdd. It has been formatted to hfs, then two 64gb redmags have been loaded upon it. Then the accident happened and it got formatted again with hfs, just the simple quick format under osx.
No write processes have been performed on the drive so far other then what osx did when it formatted the drive and put some hidden system folders on it.

So I assume at least some of the files MUST still be somewhere there..

So whats that with the fat 32 media I should use as a target? Under osx I can only format as "exfat" or ntfs (with tuxera) or hfs. Run red undead as admin I do how exactly? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just really scared to a critical limit now that my footage is lost..

Man, I just recovered one entire dead HD with TestDisk. It runs from any flash pen drive or usb external, if you want instructions I'll tell you how, is easy as pie..

Or post instructions here for every one to be able to benefit in similar situations? Thanks!

Are you using Mac or Windows??, can you see the drive letter on your computer?

Download TestDisk HERE

It'll deep analyze the drive without write anything to it, unless you tell it, and it will copy all the content to another drive, even deleted files and so. All the instructions are HERE, but if you have any question, ask, I'll be glad to help you.

You recovered R3d files from the drive with testdisk?
I'm on the mac and yes I can see the drive.

Ah I think testdisk is wrong for me since it focusses on ntfs and fat formatted drives and only tries to rebuild the file structure from what I understand. I think photorec would be the deal in my case? I wanna try out redundead first anyway!

Is there a version of RedUndead for Windows? I don't have easy access to a Mac and I just accidentally deleted a bunch of R3D files from an external 4TB drive. I haven't written any other files to the drive since the deletion (unless background tasks have written to it). I am currently running Recuva (v1.48) to see if I can recover the files, but RedUndead is more likely to succeed since it has R3D specific algorithms.

Other data recovery tools don't recognize the .r3d file format, so they are not going to be able to recover any of those files if they or the partition table for the drive was deleted. REDundead should always be the first tool you try in those situations.

I managed to get the files back using Recuva. It probably helped that the drive was mostly empty aside from the files that were lost, not a lot of fragmenting.

Help! After a long day of shooting, my client gave me a new hard drive (yet to be formatted) - I had one of my Red SSD's plugged in and the new drive mounted as well - in Disk Utility I accidentally chose the Red SSD to Erase as a Fat32 drive instead of the hard drive my client gave me!

I can't believe it; so stupid! I've tried Red Undead and have received the "Done!" message without any files found on the Red SSD. Will TestDisk work for me? Thank you so much for your help!

Hey Nick, IT'S WORKING! I'm weeping - Thank you so much for responding - it's 3:30 am here - my client flew me to Australia and I can't imagine the situation I would be in if I had lost all my files. I can't thank you enough for your quick response! I live in Seattle and if you're ever up there I need to buy you a beer. Thanks again!
