Hi,

So posted yesterday about having problems with backfocus on camera etc. Today I tried once more on a different lens. The Pl mount came off the camera, A wire that is attached the Pl mount came out of the camera and there is some liquid type substance aswel. I put the wire back in the hole, screwed the mount back on and that's me. I'm sending it back to Red as I have no Idea. I've only had it a day but I must have done something wrong.

I loosened the back focus just enough to move it at first and the focus was not changing so i loosened it a bit more and still the focus was not moving. Then the Pl mount started moving with the backfocus.

I just don't know, it must be my fault I suppose. Waited so long for the camera, spent all this money getting accessories and now have to send it back because of this. I hope the bill is not much.

James,

We did the same thing..exactly.

You probably have done no damage, but RED will have to re-mount the PL mount to your camera.

I know the feeling you must be having, where you feel so powerless..this too shall pass! :)

What I've learned is to keep my hands off things I am not technically educated enough to do.

Hope this helps...you will be up and shooting in no time.

Hi Brandon,

Thanks for getting back, I was worred about the liquid getting on the sensor. Do you remember how much it cost to get the PL re-mounted?

Thats exactly it, I feel stupid aswel to be honest for doing it and aw you know yourself. I am not good with that sort of stuff so I too shall just take a step back I imagine if I get it back (if I can afford to pay the fee to fix it).

Thanks

James

I'm not sure how much we paid for the repair, but the turn-around was less than 48 hours.

Please call or email your bomb squad rep to get advice on how to pack the camera/sensor/oily wire/etc!

ok man thanks, Yes I e-mailed sam and said it to him, Well I put the oily wire back in the hold and screwed the mount back onto the camera. I also have all the protection foam etc they send in the box when shipping. Thanks for your help.

Sorry to hear that James. It sounds like you undid the front 8 bolts too - definitely NOT as described in the Backfocus adjustment pages of the Red Operation Guide! The liquid sounds like the lubricating grease.

Backfocus isn't hard to do, but if you are not technically minded with mechanical and technical things then leave it alone. Or get a Reduser, local to you, who is to show you how! Where are you based?

Hi Eric,

Is that the 8 bolts on the ears of the Pl mount? if so yes that was my fault but I tightened them back up. I done that yesterday morning because I could not find out how to take the lens cap off so though I had to loosen the screws on the ears but then phoned Red and found out what to do so tightened the ears back up (but possibly not enough or something since the mount was moving).

Yes I will try get someone to show me when I get the camera back. Luckily family said that they will try cover cost of fix once I pay them back when I can.

Not the ear bolts. The large ones surrounding the opening to the sensor. But probably best to just leave it alone now to avoid causing damage.

When doing back focus adjustment on the RED1, after you loosed the two screws on the ring, and you rotate that ring a little... do not forget to retighten the screws. If you keep the screws loose then the mount doesn't end up sitting where it's supposed to, therefor giving you an inaccurate reading of your back focus.

The whole mount system is three pieces. One piece mounted to camera, One Mount for the lens to sit against. And One Slip Ring.

The slip ring when rotated will move the mount the lens sits against closer or farther away from the piece mounted on the front of the camera. If your slip ring is to loose then there is less holding the front piece in allowing for something like what you had happen to occur.

Remember just a little loose for that slip ring, rotate the slip ring a little, retighten the slip ring, and double check your back focus. Small movements are always best.

First of all thank you so much for everyone helping me. I am sending it off the RED EUOPE today and they said if everything is ok then I MIGHT get it back on friday, if not then won't be until after christmas. Found out from talking to a DOP that maybe the adapter was making the m42 lens into a macro by having the lens further away from the sensor which would explain how it was difficult to focus but also why the only part of the image that was in focus was 2-3 inches in front of the lens. Anyway Have a friend helping me with the backfocus in the new year so hopefully all will be good. Thanks again, great community this forum.

Having just looked up M42 - the Flange Focal Distance of M42 is 45.46mm. But Arri PL is 52mm. Nikon F-Mount is 46.50mm. At least according to Wikipedia!

Red's Nikon mount works if you replace the front PL mount ring, but the M42 needs to be 1.04mm even further back - this may mean the adapter you have for mounting an M42 lens on a PL mount may never work to allow your M42 lenses to focus as normal - so your DOP friend may be correct.

If so the only way for your M42 lenses to work on the Red would be to have an M42 mount that replaces the Red PL mount and backfocus assembly - but this would invalidate any Red warranty you have on your camera.

The lens experts on this forum will know better than I, and be able to confirm or deny this!

If you are going to want to regularly switch between lens types, like PL, M42, Nikon, etc. on your R1MX you should consider purchasing the Allstar A-Mount system. The A-Mount replaces the RED PL mount on the R1MX, and then uses specific A-Mount adapters for each lens type to mount them to the A-Mount. It is very quick and easy to do lens changes, and the A-Mount system compensates for differences in flange depth, so no backfocus adjustment is required. It is also RED-approved and won't void your warranty.
