Hi Redusers,

I have an urgent situation, i have a music video i've edited in Premiere & done compositing & VFX in AE but am having trouble exporting it as 4K!

I have a brand new 2009 Nehalem Mac Pro, 8-core 2.26Ghz
8 GB DDR3 Ram (have just ordered 4 GB more as rumours sets of 3 Ram works best)
2TB Hard Drive
Ati Radeon HD 4870

The problem is when i export 4K footage i seem to get memory crashes, would anyone know what format i should be saving as for a FINAL 4K e.g. Apple's Pro Res /Redcode/Cineion are apparently good formats. Also what settings i should have in After Effects for the most stable and fastest render times? Does Disk Caching help?

Much appreciated, would love it if someone could help resolve this!

When you say "memory crash" does that mean that AE crash, or simply that your render fail?

If what you get is render that fail, we quite often export clips as big as 8000 x 1400 here, and we encounter problems but we usually manage to get it working.

Here's a couple tips. Hold down shift and select "general" in your Preferences menu. That will unlock a "secret" preferences at the bottom of the list. There, select "disable layer cache" and set the Purge Every x frames... to something like 100 (might have to do a couple tests).

Also, before starting a render, hit caps lock, and go into the edit menu and choose: Purge > All.

Lastly, you might want to render as an images sequence instead of in a .mov directly. That way, if your render ever fail at some point, you just restart After Effects, and that start back your render where it failed. You then just import this sequence into AE and re-export it as a .mov.

If After Effects crash, now that's something else.

First of all thanks very much Dominique for your fast response : )

It's actually an error that comes up saying Adobe After Effects has encountered a memory crash, AE itself luckily doesn't crash just the error comes up and stops rendering the video.

Brilliant i will try those secret tips you've suggested, sounds like they will help.

Also, what would you suggest in terms of format to given over as a Master copy before it goes onto digibeta. I'm on a very tight deadline and i need to hand over a Highest copy. Would you suggest an image sequence? I've never really worked with image sequences, my understanding is i need to give a master copy as a mov/similar video format for broadcasting.

Thanks very much again for this.

Why are you exporting at 4K if you are delivering SD Digibeta? You might consider resizing to 2K or 1080 in After Effects before exporting.

Cineform is a great intermediate codec with a 15 trial. You might give this a try.

Sorry i forgot to explain, The 4k copy may be shown at a festival on a 80+ inch screen, i am assuming the quality would be better at 4k rather than 2k.

Thanks for the Cineform advice, for the Digibeta copy i'll be resizing to a 2K copy, and hopefully that should be suitable for the festival viewing.

Still Render errors!!

Still Render errors!!

Hi guys,

I've come to the final copy and need to export a HD version but with the effects i have used in AE including Reflections of video footage and mainly the 'Remove Grain' effect that seems very computer intensive....i keep getting errors whilst exporting about the 'Render image cache'. It stops exporting and comes up with that error or either crashes.

I'm using the HDV preset to export, uncompressed or Apple Pro Res all having problems so far. I tried the Neo HD codec a while ago once which worked but as it is the trial it has the logo imprinted on it as i can't afford the full version.

Any other suggestions of how i can resolve this? If i did have an image sequence export what would be the steps to convert them all into a video with the audio?

Really is much appreciated if someone could help.

Nick
