  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Upset about not having the fixed 2/3" Scarlet??

I really like the Fixed lens idea. Any chance of a Fixed lens Scarlet-X?

You do realize that the Scarlet Fixed was to be about 4.5 lbs WITH the built in lens while a Scarlet-X starts and 5 lbs and you can bet the glass won't be feather light. (along with a lot of other issues to consider). Let's just all agree that the Scarlet-X is a fabulous, magnificent, wonderful, groundbreaking camera - but it simply isn't the 2/3" Scarlet Fixed. Don't worry - we'll get over it... eventually.

I was also hoping for the past 3 years that the all up weight would be around 6lbs

And let the grip guys run along with the lights.

Exactly. And of course the original Scarlet spec was for 120 fps at full resolution, so there were a variety of time compression and expansion options open to a filmmaker. The new and improved Scarlet shoots 12 fps at full resolution (6 fps if you enable the HDRx). Now to shoot at 120 fps you have to window down to 1K (1024 x 540...not even 720p). It's not really a camera intended for the same purposes at all. Now it's a bandwidth-hobbled Epic. Which is still groovy for people who want to get their foot in the door and own a Red. And it's small, so it's a nicer option in some ways than buying a used Red One for entry-level customers.

Who knows what the real story is, though. The Scarlet was going to be manufactured in China, wasn't it? And now Reds are all apparently being built in California, which is cool. Maybe sometime down the line they'll revisit 2/3" when they've sold enough Scarlets to recoup some of the burned R&D dollars. I'd really love to have owned a 2/3" Scarlet, though. I'll probably buy an Ikonoscop now, but it certainly wasn't my first choice. RedCode RAW was very appealing for its combination of manageable file sizes and visually lossless quality.

Jim:

Are you guys considering a fixed lens Red camera in the future?

You see, i would love to use a Red camera in television work, that´s why i was looking forward to the fixed. With a smaller sensor, internal ND, the zoom and a bit more simpel setup of the camera it would have been perfect. It is faster to work that way when you have to run and gun...
I really hope you guys will consider to make a good camera aimed at the television camera guys. Then the Scarlet X would be a nice camera to do interviews and make nice portraits. I would have bought both.

There is a big market for this to, i`m sure you know. And i hope you one day will reintroduce a fixed lens Red camera aimed at those who need to run and gun.

You know, less resolution IS actually good enough for television theese days, when it changes... Upgrade the sensor ;)

Congrats on the announcement :=)

We knew that we couldn't please everyone. Wish we could, but no way to do that. So we did the best we could.

Jim

You gave us the MOST camera for the $...even though Scarlet is slightly out of my budget at the moment, I am happy that the camera I am saving for is a digital Cine cam and not a prosumer camcorder. HDRX and 4K frame were two fantastic bonuses I was vcertainly not expecting to see included.

Keep up the great work guys...and do this industry a favor, NEVER STOP!

well like Robert said elsewhere, 2/3 doesn't mean it's a 'prosumer camcorder'. The F23 is $100,000+++ 2/3 'camcorder'

UR a PIMP now with ur Scarlet X!!!!!
You did a fantastic job Jim. You lured me in with the fixed 2/3, and the camera evolved into the very thing I wanted it too. Thank you for the hard work and all the passion. I'm looking forward to getting my Scarlet! My wife even made us a special dinner to celebrate the special occasion. It's been a big wait for me for 3 years. And she jumped on to enjoy the ride.

To those that are upset, I completely understand, but RED owes nobody anything. Work harder and save longer. I know, easier said than done, but it's doable. And if it's not...looks like there will be plenty out there in a aggressive rental market.

I always wanted to shoot a great feature is always been one of my greatest dream which I'm sure my dream is also share by millions if not billions around the world. with a very small budget of course, I needed a great camera at a great price! but the usual low budget choices were always (Panasonic, Sony, Jvc, canon, etc) I always found myself searching(for years) the www. here and there and always end up not getting anything because there was always something wrong or missing in these cameras (companies driven by MONETARY gain adding features here and there little by little so for and so on) (so back to the old nothing just wishing to hit the lotto or something so I can make myself the perfect camera, frustration got in and hopes got out) to make a long story short. then on my infinite search in this dark world I live in for the right camera I suddenly saw a light! I came across Jim's great scarlet (my heroic camera maker) they called themselves RED i told this to everyone I came across since 2007 doing exactly what I wish I could do (making the perfect cinema camera at a price anyone could actually afford) his got the money and the best part above all, his got the passion, yes PASSION I couldn't ask for more, a company which makes cinema cameras driven by passion, Oh Excellent! I just can't wait to get my hands on scarlet, wow I wonder the power of RED SCARLET on everyone's hand, people like me who don't even have a bank account because money it's always short but actually be able to think I could get my hands on this amazing 3k camera, I started dreaming and dreaming big just thought get ready for true cinema revolution I could see great deal of choices for the future as far as movies, shows, commercial, etc. choices to see the other side of the coin not only the big dog's. See the perspective of people with great talent from all over the glove having the perfect tool at a price that will allow them to truly show their skills at a level never done or seen before. That to me was powerful! this was revolution!

Yesterday 11-03-2011 9:00pm was supposed to be one of the happiest day of my life, finitely all I have talked about for years was to become true, now I guess I talked too much! I must it be out of mind mind! I broke into tears as I saw all go down hill , what happened? what happened with 3k scarlet heck even 6k scarlet I could have done that even if it meant I had to put on my gasoline boots and go trough hell and come back with that money but now double that amount it's just not thinkable for me and for many, many others I'm sure, if this is the cost of knowing what you are doing in my case I would rather have the innocent part of it, I prefer when you didn't know as much, doing 3k for 3k hey even with a bit more knowledge 3k for 6k. Now what? (so back to the old nothing just wishing to hit the lotto or something so I can affort to buy the perfect camera, (which is EPIC of course) frustration it's now back and hopes are just that, hopes) Sorry that's my frustration writing I had to let it go some how.

Never the less I do like to thank and congratulate Jim and the RED team for been brave enough to even try and share some light for those left in the dark, you have done great I never doubt it you for an instant I guess I just have to wait for another boat. Sail on RED! Sail on!

I'm just sad to know I'll be missing the fun again!

SCARLET is AMAZING. And I am over the moon. I'm genuinely sorry for those who aren't. Natural to share your disappointment. But from the man whose every post tells you to expect the specs to change.... I dunno... I always felt like I was walking into this release eyes wide open, knowing anything could happen... I had opened up my expectations prior to avoid suffering.

ENG guys, it's tough. I thought Mark Toia made a good post. But this post ^^
Man, now thats a post that pulls at my heart strings.

Leonidas, If I make decent money out of my next film. I swear to god I'll give my Scarlet to you.
The Scarlet Indie film dream is one I understand and deeply appreciate.

Alternatively. You said you could get 6K Leonidas? So if there's another eighty REDusers willing to throw a hundred in, then you'd have your scarlet, and your dreams could come true right?

So I'll throw in the first. (My only caveat is that you must start using more paragraphs!!:))

* Those of like mind, please see the new, everyone can't be happy, but hey, maybe just one more person can... thread I'm starting.

Best Wishes

Lliam

I think no one should be complaining about the fact that the 2/3rd sensor was scrapped for an Epic light model. No other major player that I can think of is making a super 16 cam other than Ikonoskop and their clientele is a niche market that consists mostly of artsy types of peeps that really want a super 16 cam as opposed to what the major players are putting out. I think it took balls for Jim to realize that the fact that the previous 2/3rd Scarlet having had unresolved focusing issues w/ the fixed lens would be slammed by peeps with the mentality that s35 is everything, was the right business move to take with coming out with the S35 Scarlet Epic Light instead. The price is ridiculously low for such a super cam and people should be happy. If I wanted to shoot 35, and will at some point, the Scarlet X is a no brainer due to it's epic specs and low low price. Jim has made the Epic line affordable for all and he should be commended and applauded for that matter. If one needs super 16, just get an Ikonoskop like I did. Has a ccd w/ global shutter which is better for run and gun IMO, has uncompressed RAW in C-DNG, 12-bit Kodak color, and honestly looks close to the images from Black Swan IMO, that crisp of detail. I think RED knew the Super 16 market was pretty much a niche market, at least these days, and with the quality of footage being produced from the small botique camera company Ikonoskop which is already competitively priced, made no sense in further developing a camera (the 2/3 Scarlet) that just simply had too many issues to deal with. I think Jim, by giving us an affordable Epic Light, by doing so, basically apologized in scrapping the 2/3rd sensor by giving society a great deal for the money which other companies would have charged as much as the current price of the Epic X/M for. The choice is simple really: A)need to shoot a blockbuster in 35, get a scarlet. B)Prefer the intimacy of Super 16 for independent ventures, get the Ikonoskop. RED's main competition, and I'm glad it has been realized, is not independent film but it's stature as a blockbuster camera company. Granted, there have been some blockbusters shot on super 16, but they are far and few between in the normal choice of going with 35mm.

I think someone cyber assaulted the paragraph button :willy_nilly:
Well, at least sentences began with a capital letter and ended in a full stop. That has to count for something.

I think a lot of it is some of us just really want something we can afford to own. The fixed idea was great, it had EVERYTHING we needed(at our price point) and was ready to go even if they upped the price to over 10k$ i think for the scarlet 8x fixed people would of bought it all day.

I completely understand some of the posters here... I do... I absolutely LOVED the Fix SCARLET so much that I felt guilty about how much I was liking a sub 10k camera with sub 3k resolution.
on a Fixed Zoom nonetheless, coming from a guy that absolutely has swear by Primes his entire life!!

I wanted several Fix SCARLET cameras for their specs to be able to do AMAZING BTS video logs and still frame extractions at once, with ease of control with one mane operation per camera...

Now they are gone!!

I am truly sad, since I was also one of the very few to been given the great Honor and pleasure to test it in the field...

I don't know and don't even pretend to think I know, how much Jim is sad and or even PISSED about having to scratch it off the table after years of R&D, lots of money and man power spent...

But I sure can tell you that for what I know Jim... SCRAPPING FIX SCARLET MUST HAVE BEEN INSANELY PAINFUL TO SWALLOW... Take my word on this...

Now, the newly announced SCARLET X is yet an other incredible achievement of RED... But I still understand you guys, no matter, as that you guys can't afford to go over 10k for a full system...

I fill for you, I truly do... But I absolutely also LOVE the RED approach, and only wish you sincerely that in off money one way or an other comes to your hands...

And you can then afford this INSANE new camera form RED that is SCARLET X!!

Limited budget is relative…

We couldn’t afford a slew of EPIC Ms etc. to perform the tests we needed. So originally we needed to look at ways we could simulate EPIC to produce the results we needed for special technical systems HW and SW we are developing (this is largely self funded BTW). Now we don’t need to simulate EPIC! So With Scarlet this has cut 100(s) of thousands of dollars on what we would have had to spend just to get to point that we can fully demonstrate our true capabilities and has probably cut 18 months two years of incremental development (Mainly advanced S-3d/VR/CG capabilities). For us the bleeding edge is software development (which is very expensive as it is) and to add significant expense by using full blown EPICs is very tough for any smaller private outfit that requires special modifications and engineering; i.e. rental is not such an option.

All I can say is the Scarlet HAS exceeded my wildest dreams…because we could not afford to do what we really needed to do with EPICs. So in that sense our “bacon” has been saved to a mind blowing degree.

BUT I have to say originally Scarlet was not even on my RADAR, and it seems the ground has shifted substantially so that we can perform perfect simulation of an EPIC based system, but obviously this is not what a lot of people originally had in mind.

At this moment I really want to take my hat off to Terry VerHaarr (I hope I spelt that right). He absolutely stuck to his guns and had argued the case VERY sensibly and very perfectly to my mind so well in fact that he totally turned my thinking from even daring to hope for 4k, 5k at lower fps, this and that of whatever size down to a 2/3” 3k device. So thanks to Terry come the announcement I was blown away to a degree that is hard to fathom… as what is offered is beyond what I could have ever have hoped for… and this really is the most amazing leg up we have ever been given.

R&D to product/capability is a very hungry little monster that eats bails cash on a daily basis and you really have to keep your nerve. Meanwhile you are trying to crack very difficult problems and secure your IP. So it’s an absolute uphill blood bath ALL the way but for a small group we have accomplished a hell of lot (I think). All I can say is that whatever these guys are smoking at RED has given us an unbelievable life line, and that’s a fact. Truly beyond my wildest dreams, I’m expecting someone to throw a cold bucket of water over my head and they shout “Wake Up” … And I discover that it was all a dream.. and that Scarlet IS 2/3” 3k etc etc. Never once did we have an “easy” button to push. As corny and haggard as this might sound but for us “the future is now!”.

It’s all relative.

Best to You ALL,

Eric

And thank you RED (understatement)...

Thanks, Eric... I think. :-)

Truely no “snarkyness” intended or great irony…, genuine respect for your line of thinking and approach 100% all the way.

Eric

I think on the whole you keep us honest...

No, Eric - really, I meant THANKS!! Very much appreciate the comments. I get a little obsessive and assertive sometimes so it's nice to know I don't piss EVERYONE off. :-)

He, he, he;

At least you still appear to have your sanity and sense of humor, both two very valuable things… In my case I’m still wondering about the former, hopfully life returns to more forward and concrete things…

Best,

Eric
