  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Upset about not having the fixed 2/3" Scarlet??

We knew that we couldn't please everyone. Wish we could, but no way to do that. So we did the best we could.

Jim

Jim, I wanted to not only congratulate you for truly socializing your high end cameras to the masses but also deliver an apology. I ended up going with the IKON about a couple weeks ago, and for sometime have been skeptical of RED's business model in terms of the clientele that could only afford the R-1 and Epic prices. You have truly crushed every single cmos camera on the market and truly have done a "Steve Jobs," on the industry, in the democratization of your wonderful cams. I fucking salute you. Truly an industry leader as well as a damn right maverick.

I agree ..... Just reed this...

Well, I'd still take a SCARLET-X over the Canon any day, however I won't be buying either of them. The optical characteristics of the 3K SCARLET proto were important to me, and I'd really hoped to see something capable of shooting video >1080p @ 60fps. 1080p60 has been available in <$1k consumer camcorders for a while now, so seeing the SCARLET fall to <60fps for all resolutions over 1080p gets a colossal *yaaaawwwwwn* from me. Obviously, when RED bumped the resolution of SCARLET up into EPIC territory, they had to take away something, and it appears that frame rate was that something. Bummer.

Don't forget that S35 is not a run'n'gun rig. You'll have to follow focus and your SSD won't last very long at 4K/5K. Lenses are more expensive too.

Basically, we switched from the 10K$ world to 25K$ world and for cinema use only (no run'n'gun, ENG use now).

I must find a B plan now.

I run and gun all time with EPIC.. (with red volts) why cant you with Scarlet !... If you don't want a short depth of feild.. just shoot a small ZOOM at f16 up... then you get a huge depth of feild 2/3 inche look all day every day. :)

Then you can shoot 3K on Scarlet X... The crop will make it close to 2/3 - 3/4 I think. I guess you can even use 16mm glass on it and use it in crop-mode :)

With the Scarlet X you need to spend around $ 20,000 with storage and lense to make it work ... very disappointing .... really... :mad5:

Happy about the news

Happy about the news

Apparently most people are happy... it is the ones on a limited budget that aren't. I understand that. I wish we could satisfy everyone, but that simply is not the case. For those on a limited budget, there are lots of great options. But 4K is not one of them.

I have been clear from the beginning that "everything changes". I meant it.

Jim

I am one of the ones who can no longer afford the Scarlet. Frankly I couldn't be happier about the news. This is a way better product than I was expecting. I will figure out a way to get the cash for it and when I do I know I will be making a professional product. Thanks Jim and the entire RED team for changing the world again.

Waiting around for any new technology, while your opportunities decay, is simply foolish.

If you can't afford to buy a SCARLET, surely you'll be able to afford a SCARLET rental or a RED ONE rental to make your precious projects.

Seriously, SCARLET-X is going to put a massive dent in the rental market for indie projects.

In a very short while, anybody with a project will be able to shoot it on RED.

In fact, I'm betting that a lot of new SCARLET-X owners will be dying to work on projects for free, for experience, to put their new cameras to work, to spend time on sets - for no other reason than because it's fun! Just as we have seen new RED ONE owners - only there will be more of them!

My suspicion is, most of the people complaining the loudest don't really have projects. If they did, they would be working on them - not forum bashing.

And now - back to editing my own feature film project: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1877707/

The Scarlet-X is and will always be an amazing deal, but I myself dropped my RED One reservation years ago when I found out that RED was offering a 3K camera at $3k. Then it went up to $3750, then $4750, but with these increases came some great features like a 8X fixed lens and 120fps at 3K for less than half of what the current price of Scarlet is. I am still debating whether to put down the deposit. I understand that the higher frame rates would not be offered at 5K or 4K, but if they would at least stick with the original plan of offering 120fps at 3K or even 2K, I would put down my deposit today.

Not necessarily a bad idea if the price increase were the sticking point, but it's not. I'd be incredibly excited about a 2/3" or S16 interchangeable lens Scarlet with the original specs at the Scarlet-X price point. Just much less interested in Scarlet-X as it actually is.

It seems there are a lot of people who just can't understand this... there is a tendency to think everyone wants what they want. For me, too, the price is not the only issue. I will admit the idea of spending an additional $5-20K for glass is one of the "issues" but other than that I loved the form factor and the specs of the Scarlet Fixed. I will probably end up with a Scarlet-X but I am going to have to consider it carefully. What I want the most is REDCode and no other camera (other than Epic, of course) offers that. One of the things I'll want to look at carefully is the somewhat restricted data rates for REDCode at 3K and 4K. All in all, there are a lot of changes to consider if one was aimed at the Scarlet Fixed.

You do realize it has nothing to do with budget for a lot of people, right? It was appealing that someone was making a "digital 16mm" rig and modern compact primes to go with it. At the end of the day you couldn't do it, which is completely understandable. Just don't pretend it was an issue of 2/3" not being "future-proof" because it's not like you couldn't have increased the price and released a 4K 2/3" sensor if you'd wanted to continue doing R&D on a 2/3" camera. You bailed on 2/3". It's not what you guys do and it's understandable that you decided it was too much work to build two completely different cameras. But please don't pretend that it's because 2/3" sensors are for poor people and you don't want to get any poverty-stink on you.

Just understand that some of us have been waiting around for a 2/3" camera that could shoot RAW. And not because we couldn't afford your Super-35 cameras, but because we've (I've) spent a lifetime shooting 16mm and 2/3" video and like what it brings to the table. If you'd decided to charge $9700 for a 2/3" camera I'd have bought one. It's not the price. It's that you didn't deliver something in the format that you'd spent 3 years assuring us you were dedicated to building.

Guys, it's good to see that others are disappointed, too.

It's also good to see that super 16 mm is not dead in the heart of moviemakers.

Sorry you feel that way. The delays in development exposed the fact that 3K is not future-proof. And we make cameras for professionals. or those that aspire to be professionals. We had a hard time justifying a 3K professional camera. The fact that the 8X fixed zoom had a fatal flaw (couldn't hold focus from wide to tele)... was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Jim

Ahhh that clarifies a lot Jim... thanks for being so candid. So I guess the analysis was that an optical redesign (mucho $$$$) would have been required, (and/or a change in lens spec) and between that and the aversion to 3K that developed, that was the project stuffed.

I STILL think there's a market for it. Somehow fix the lens and I'll buy it in a hot second, even at a higher price, ahead of any possible competition - 4K matters, S35 matters, but can live with 3K for many jobs and to me the critical features were lens, size, price, and above all else Redcode raw shooting. Man I loved that concept, pick it up and shoot. But I don't think it's happening.

I posted this on the Scarlet feedback page last night, thought is should be here too.

Frist off: the new Scarlet is an amazing camera at an amazing price. If you were looking for a professional camera, you couldn't ask for more. And as happy as I am that it is a serious camera, I am bummed that we aren't getting the 2/3" camera with interchangeable mini primes.

Now, before everyone jumps down my throat, let me explain. The 2/3" 3k offered more than enough resolution for 90% of content that you would shoot, in a very small package. It would also have made for a terrific package for travel and experimental shoots, where weight and bulk are a premium. It would intercut with Red ONE and Epic much better than any other camera out there. For me the big point was the ability to put together a very small 3D package and have the cameras side by side. But most importantly it would have had the amazing support of Red and the Red RAW.

Any chance we could still have the little bad-a** camera too?

If Red is having problems with the fixed zoom, then ditch it, but keep the interchangeable camera. Our only options now are overpriced consumer cameras on steroids with poor output codecs that weren't designed to shoot motion.

A professional digital 16mm camera is needed!

I'd buy an interchangeable 3K 2/3" Scarlet in a blink. The fixed lense is not viable anymore.

Scarlet-X can still be a great run and gun camera. Stop down.

You do realize that the Scarlet Fixed was to be about 4.5 lbs WITH the built in lens while a Scarlet-X starts and 5 lbs and you can bet the glass won't be feather light. (along with a lot of other issues to consider). Let's just all agree that the Scarlet-X is a fabulous, magnificent, wonderful, groundbreaking camera - but it simply isn't the 2/3" Scarlet Fixed. Don't worry - we'll get over it... eventually.

Once again I'll be missing the fun!

Once again I'll be missing the fun!

I always wanted to shoot a great feature is always been one of my greatest dream which I'm sure my dream is also share by millions if not billions around the world. with a very small budget of course, I needed a great camera at a great price! but the usual low budget choices were always (Panasonic, Sony, Jvc, canon, etc) I always found myself searching(for years) the www. here and there and always end up not getting anything because there was always something wrong or missing in these cameras (companies driven by MONETARY gain adding features here and there little by little so for and so on) (so back to the old nothing just wishing to hit the lotto or something so I can make myself the perfect camera, frustration got in and hopes got out) to make a long story short. then on my infinite search in this dark world I live in for the right camera I suddenly saw a light! I came across Jim's great scarlet (my heroic camera maker) they called themselves RED i told this to everyone I came across since 2007 doing exactly what I wish I could do (making the perfect cinema camera at a price anyone could actually afford) his got the money and the best part above all, his got the passion, yes PASSION I couldn't ask for more, a company which makes cinema cameras driven by passion, Oh Excellent! I just can't wait to get my hands on scarlet, wow I wonder the power of RED SCARLET on everyone's hand, people like me who don't even have a bank account because money it's always short but actually be able to think I could get my hands on this amazing 3k camera, I started dreaming and dreaming big just thought get ready for true cinema revolution I could see great deal of choices for the future as far as movies, shows, commercial, etc. choices to see the other side of the coin not only the big dog's. See the perspective of people with great talent from all over the glove having the perfect tool at a price that will allow them to truly show their skills at a level never done or seen before. That to me was powerful! this was revolution!

Yesterday 11-03-2011 9:00pm was supposed to be one of the happiest day of my life, finitely all I have talked about for years was to become true, now I guess I talked too much! I must it be out of mind mind! I broke into tears as I saw all go down hill , what happened? what happened with 3k scarlet heck even 6k scarlet I could have done that even if it meant I had to put on my gasoline boots and go trough hell and come back with that money but now double that amount it's just not thinkable for me and for many, many others I'm sure, if this is the cost of knowing what you are doing in my case I would rather have the innocent part of it, I prefer when you didn't know as much, doing 3k for 3k hey even with a bit more knowledge 3k for 6k. Now what? (so back to the old nothing just wishing to hit the lotto or something so I can affort to buy the perfect camera, (which is EPIC of course) frustration it's now back and hopes are just that, hopes) Sorry that's my frustration writing I had to let it go some how.

Never the less I do like to thank and congratulate Jim and the RED team for been brave enough to even try and share some light for those left in the dark, you have done great I never doubt it you for an instant I guess I just have to wait for another boat. Sail on RED! Sail on!

I'm just sad to know I'll be missing the fun again!
