  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Upset about not having the fixed 2/3" Scarlet??

This man got it.

Biggest disappointment to take away from this would be that we aren't getting a S16 digital cinema version. The fixed was starting to feel it's age when the market kept changing, but 2/3rds has a significant place in the market! Hell, I'd say upgrade it to true S16 and keep the specs -- I'll buy that in a heartbeat!

Really, I think my only disappointment here is not price/performance/whatever but that EPIC, seemingly the true and worthy successor to film, has been left without it's little sister's heir; S16 simply won't have a great successor anymore... I find that sad. 3K (or Quad HD) would seem perfect for it. It's not 4K, but there aren't any S16 lenses that can resolve 4K, so that isn't a problem. Still, I'd pay my vote for the old interchangeable SCARLET. Hell, I'd even wait another year for it if they bumped up the sensor size to S16 and changed the resolution to QuadHD! But alas, it seems this isn't going to happen...

Yep. +1 for the bump to true S16; I'd be there in a heartbeat.

Sorry you feel that way. The delays in development exposed the fact that 3K is not future-proof. And we make cameras for professionals. or those that aspire to be professionals. We had a hard time justifying a 3K professional camera. The fact that the 8X fixed zoom had a fatal flaw (couldn't hold focus from wide to tele)... was the straw that broke the camel's back.

That's great, i'm a professional. My company owns 2 Epic's.

The point is that alot of folks had plans based around the 2/3" sensor. Including me.
The Interchangable 2/3" would've been perfect for certain tasks... yet it was not to be. 120FPS at 1K instead of 3K, at a higher pricepoint than the 2/3" just doesn't cut it.

Why didn't you announce the ditching of the 2/3" a little earlier on? It would have prevented alot of frustation and disappointment.

The Scarlet-x is essentially the Epic-s... just renamed to Scarlet again, while burrying the 2/3" project.

Thank you for your sympathy toward those of us who were looking forward to the 8x Fixed Scarlet. I'm sure most of us understand why everything fell into place the way it did. Is there any chance that the 120fps option could be upgraded to a higher resolution like 2K or 3K in the near future or is 1K the limit outside of purchasing an EPIC? Thanks.

Congratulations Jim and Red!

When I started in production I was a Film loyalist but the Red MX won me over. The Epic-M made me a Red loyalist not just because of the cameras capabilities but how supportive the team at Red was of those who first started working with it in the early stages. Now there is the Scarlet-X, a camera whose specs are way better then I had hoped for and whose price point is incredible!

I know there are a lot of people unhappy about the price and not having a fixed lens option. Put in terms of price have a little perspective people, Scarlet is still less then half an MX boby's price and is still less then the EOS C300 (which only records a 1080 video). The fixed lens aspect from what I've understood has always held the Scarlet release back. If it doesn't work get rid of it.

I'm tired of reading posts by people who are whining like children because they didn't get the pony they asked for for Christmas.

Stephen, when you spent 2,5 years on this forum, then you can complain... otherwise ...

Hmmmm... We didn't ask for pony ... Red promised some thing ... Gave something else ...

I think there's a younger audience here too...... lucky things!

what if some of you guys that can't afford the camera now, just pair up and pay half? this community is awesome, all about sharing... buddy system!

It's not good form to have just 9 posts and be a new member but come on here bashing hard working people and calling them children for expressing their frustrations on exactly the forum where their frustrations SHOULD logically be expressed

I'm excited about what the Scarlet has become. I may have to wait a little longer before I make the big purchase, but not disappointed at all. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

I guess some still don't seem to understand what this means..."Everything in life changes... including our camera specs and delivery dates..."

Not necessarily a bad idea if the price increase were the sticking point, but it's not. I'd be incredibly excited about a 2/3" or S16 interchangeable lens Scarlet with the original specs at the Scarlet-X price point. Just much less interested in Scarlet-X as it actually is.

Apparently most people are happy... it is the ones on a limited budget that aren't. I understand that. I wish we could satisfy everyone, but that simply is not the case. For those on a limited budget, there are lots of great options. But 4K is not one of them.

I have been clear from the beginning that "everything changes". I meant it.

Jim

Ok, but I do not want 4K, I want 3K or even HD, the Raw and DF is what I was waiting for....

Actually they gave the Scarlet S35 more or less as promised. But they ditched the whole 2/3 Scarlet program out of nowhere. It's just not funny when you get footage of and interviews about prototypes (Ted and Joseph/Ketch running around with Fixed Scarlets) and all of a sudden it's: "We can't get the lens right." After 3 years?? The Scarlet program was supposed to be with the 2/3 sensor and a S35 solution. Then they changed Scarlet S35 to Epic S; made sense as EPIC X and Scarlet S35 were more similar to eachother than Scarlet 2/3 and Scarlet S35. They renamed Scarlet 35 into Epic S (reduser members actually stopped them from calling it EPIC LIGHT). Made sense!
But now Epic-S is Scarlet X. Price is fantastic, nobody complaining there. Still they ditched the whole Scarlet 8x Fixed and Scarlet Interchangeable Cinema. 3k is not good enough anymore. For some it would be. And if not then that is hardly news but was the same 6 months ago. Could have thought about it then.
Instead, they hype up everybodies expectations and then: here goes nothing.
What they say is: go somewhere else if you can't afford Scarlet X. Nice. What happened to options and loyalty to the customers who came to this forum almost every day for the last two years because of those cameras?

Don't get me wrong: I'm happy for everybody who found their dream camera in Scarlet X and can actually afford it. It's a fantastic day for you and I'm looking forward to whatever you shoot with it.
But we are here, too. And we have a right to be disappointed and feel slightly abandoned.

Changing something is different .. then ... Saying something & come up with something else totally different.

BTW congrats

Fair enough, my comment was a bit harsh.

We knew that we couldn't please everyone. Wish we could, but no way to do that. So we did the best we could.

Jim

You were fair in saying that we'd get the camera we wanted - and the pricepoint was a little higher than I guessed, but I still ordered (and cringed at import duty and VAT at 20%) for one simple reason. It was the camera I wanted
Thanks for not being a complete tease, and giving us a payoff :)
