  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

so when we go to upgrade is it the entire package or just the body? i almost have more in drives, batteries, monitor, eyepiece...... than i do in the body. it looks to me that none of the current stuff will work on the new cameras (ok minus the rods).

You're talking about the trade-in offer to get an Epic X, right?

I believe you trade in the RED ONE body only. You keep all of the accessories, most of which should work on the Epic X. RED-DRIVE, CF cards, batteries, LCDs & EVFs are all supposed to be compatible with the new, modular systems.

The thing you may need to re-purchase is a shoulder-mount system, since we don't know if the current ones for RED ONE will work for Epic or Scarlet. Also, little accessories like the Element Technica break-out box or the R1 Nikon mount will probably not be compatible with the new system.

I've got to say here, I've read a lot of posts stating that the drives should work on the new Epic systems. I just can't see that being the case...

For Scarlet's RC42 recording mode, it should be possible to use a RedDrive, but there is NO WAY they're going to clock up 225-plus MB/s, so using them on Epic systems (unless there's an unannounced lower bit-rate mode in Epic) is going to be a no go-er, I suspect...

If that's the case we're looking at an even bigger wrench thrown into a post-flow that still hasn't been resolved.

I'm sure Epic will have lower data rate recording modes. And you'd probably use those for most of your shooting. The fact that the camera can record at 225 MB/s probably becomes most significant when you're shooting 100 frames/sec.

Yeah I think it is safe to assume EPIC will be able to shoot at lower rates as well.

One thing I haven't heard people talk about is the "multiple recording modules" addition announced on the 3rd.

"Optional hi-speed DSMC CF or DSMC SSD modules."

I would imagine these will be needed to achieve the uber high data rates on the EPICs.

I was thinking that there was a good chance of that, but it was interesting to note that on all of the announcement pages featured the R1, both of it's modes (28 and 36) were mentioned, whereas only 225/250/500 were mentioned for the Epics.

Now, it's probably just that they haven't locked down the specs, and I may well be reading far to much into it but that, plus the fact the RC42 wasn't mentioned in the Epic specs, made it less than 100% clear for me...

Hope you're all right though!
Dom.

Well, CF-wise, I would imagine they're planning on C-FAST as the recording medium of choice, along with SSD-based units. That would mean that hitting the kind of massive data-rates they're talking about may well be possible with smallish recording modules.

Of course, as planetearth points out, post could get a bit hellish!! That said, I think we'll start to see that becoming less and less of an issue as data storage manufacturers turn away from capacity and toward bandwidth as their selling point, and therefore main thrust of R&D...

Frankly, I think it's far too early to be getting nervous about anything - we're all pissing in the wind right now!! Like you said, it's all theory (and there's precious little of even that!) - once some solid data starts to become available, then we can panic!

Cheers all, and sorry if I've upset the applecart at all - I'm sure it's all under control amongst those who actually know what's going on!...

Easy now,
Dom.

i know you are right. i havent receved any of my drives/ cards/ and or pro LCD yet!

just looking into the future! u know hopes and dreams, good things like that!

plus pissing into the wind is fun, especially in the winter!
