Hi folks,

I read about the red one scensor upgrade.
What is known so far about it?

Will it be possible to upgrade an ''old'' red with a new scensor or does it means only new red ones come with a better scensor?
Is it possible to do it yourself, do you have to send it in?
Price?
What is better about the new scensor? Better low light performance would be nice. (unless red can fix it with firmware updates)

Thanks
Oli

What I'm about to say isn't officially or unofficially from Red. This is my own opinion based upon experience with Red.

If you buy a Red now or own one, you will get an upgrade. It won't only be in new Reds.

Considering it is the sensor, you will have to ship your Red in to get the upgrade.

I don't know the price. My guess is that it will come in 2009 and it will rock.

As a guess, i would completely agree with this assessment :)

I'll go out on a limb and predict an upgrade price of between $5000 and $10,000. Any less would really slice into sales of Epics. . . and any more wouldn't be feasible for most RED One owners.

I was hoping between $1-2 (including shipping and labor). (disclaimer: I'm not business man or techie!).

But I don't think it would slice into sales of Epics. I don't know much about Epic, but it has a completely different sensor then even the upgrade... 5k. It's physically larger, right? A customer who wants an Epic for what it truly does isn't going to see an upgraded Red One as an alternative.

10k sounds too much... too close to the price of an entire Red One. I don't know how much it costs to develop and make these sensors, but it also seems to me that Jim isn't gouging per user but spreading the cost and profit out among the thousands of users (literally... up to 4000 now)... hence the low cost of a lot of Red stuff. So even 5k sounds a bit high for a single Reduser... you can get almost 2 Scarlets for that.

First of all. Nobody knows. And at the moment we have to be patient till next year till Epic end the new sensors are out.

Second:
There are two sides.
Red get a own new RED4K Mysterium X Sensor (ore a modification of the 5K Sensorboard). This would mean a little less noise more dynamic and maybe some other enhanced details, but no dramtic higher framerates no 5K at the end a better Red but not an Epic.
This solution maybe can be rel cheep.

On the other side.
Red put in the 5K Myserium X and want to open all features. This means you have to build in principle a whole Epic in the housing of a REDone.
And the price whould not be soo much different from the upgrate to a real Epic. I think Red want to avoid this solution so the offered very early the full price trade in for REDone.
Honestly I was really wondering about the RED statement about Sensor upgrate to the REDone. But Red would not be RED if they could not suprise the people.
But again anything is speculation.

The best answer is this post by Jim:

"Sorry to strongly disagree with you. RED ONE will be in our lineup for many years and get all the attention it deserves, starting with a sensor upgrade in 2009.

I think those of you that think RED ONE should be infinitely upgraded at all costs are spoiled. Actually, we are letting you do that!

Epic will be a limited production model. It has a new and completely different architecture. And we are still allowing you to upgrade from the RED ONE! The cost of upgrade is steep because the development cost very is expensive.

What exactly do you think you are entitled to and are not getting? A reasonably priced sensor upgrade or an expensive full upgrade? Come on... starting to be irritating.

Sorry. Just my point of view.

Jim"

This is just me speculating on how I would allocate my money - I'd think that if it is an upgrade to a MysteriumX 4K sensor then anything up to $10,000 would fit. If it was a jump to a MysteriumX 5K sensor and the no doubt extensive internal architecture changes that would demand... up to $20,000 would have me leaning to that option. Anything more than that and I would weight the scales toward trading in on the EPIC rather than upgrading my RED ONE.

This is simply my crunching numbers on the customer end of things and has no bearing on what Red can or cannot do economically or architecturally.

Besides this sensor upgrade, do you think they'll eventually change the camera body also, making it a bit lighter for instance...?

This 5k Epic weights 4 pounds less then the current Red one. So I guess the Redteam could make a smaller and lighter Red one by now, no?

I assume the weight difference between EPIC and RED ONE is expected to be off less I/Os etc. plus additional design changes. I hardly believe the current RED ONE body will be getting lighter when changing some electronics.

Anyhow, this whole thread is on pure speculation - as always.

While all around seem to envision a 100 Hz RED ONE now, I would be happy having some news if we'll ever see 60 Hz on the current models without a sensor upgrade. That sound so much more feasible to me. So my real question would be: What does build 16 in that area?
