Is there a way i can update my RED ONE MX from Build 31 to the latest firmware without an ownership transfer?

Not legally. The ownership transfer is for our protection to prevent stolen cameras from being of any value.

If we openly share the firmware then we risk increasing the value of our cameras on the black market.

Big no no.

Sorry.

It doesn't prevent a thief from using it - just from getting the latest firmware but at this point it is probably a pretty late version anyway and quite useable. If theft prevention is/was the intent (which I'm not sure is correct) it seems like it adds up to more of punishment for legitimate owners (that may not want to spent $500 for that paperwork transfer on a camera that sold for $4K by the manufacturer a few years ago) than thieves.

Guess I just have to save up the money for the ownership transfer. I'm still investing in getting the camera mobile so Build 32 is going to have to wait

in all honesty 32 really only adds the ability to view red color/ gamme 3 in camera, which is nice. but if you don't have build 32 you can always just leave it on raw view and set your exposures from that, you'll get a feel for it after a bit of testing. in general i usually set iso around 400 to 640. with red color/gamma 4 out you're going to end up switching it in rcx anyhow so really i don't think it matters. just do testing with some color charts and get a feel for how it reacts in relation to your lighting style.

A stolen RED camera is worth no more/ less than a legitimately owned RED camera on the open market until the person goes to have it serviced and finds out it is indeed stolen. At that point they already would have spent their money on it and the deal is done but a thief isn't going to advertise that the camera they're selling you is stolen so it's a moot point. So in that respect, no the ownership transfer is not for your protection and from the perspective of a company that resells gears, most customers opt not to complete the transfer process until they have a problem with the camera if they have a problem with the camera. At least that's the case with our customers, not one of which I think has ever contacted us to have the process completed.

Likewise, just about every other camera out there benefits from free and open firmware updates which, again have a dubious impact on resale value.

I agree with the other posters. If it truly existing to simply cover your ass it would be free and the paid inspection would be optional. The amount of RED One owners that are paying $2500 for a body that are also going to pay RED $500 for ownership transfer is slim to nil and slim just up and left town. Also he owed me money so if you see him...

A thief will just get one of his friends, who has the ability, to download the update to 'increase' the RED ONE's value.

You could ask the owner of the camera (the person you bough tit from) to add you to their RED account without admin privileges but with FW update privileges. It is doable.

What Red should do is offer a $100 ownership transfer where they waive the camera inspection service.

I just bought on eBay a RED ONE MX with very low hours...unfortunately neither RED or the store at eBay will help as their privacy policies won't let me contact the original owner...there should be an option to do an owner transfer for those are willing to pay for it, specially when service for the RED ONE its still available, thats what RED told me by email...that they can still service the camera.
