  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So there's a lot of hang wringing in the threads about the drives being discontinued and buried beneath it all was this quasi announcement by Jarred that Red has killed their 64gb CF card program (stop me Red if I am reading this wrong)
http://reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=642104&postcount=101

And that in combination with the EOL of the Drives and Ram has me wondering.

What future media will there be for the Red One? I know there is a huge world of media possibilities for the Epic/Scarlet systems, but with Red we are limited to either CF, or something coming in through the existing drive port. Has Red made the decision for 16gb to be the last and highest recording media for the Red One?

I believe it's already been stated that all future media coming out for epic and scarlet WILL be R1 compatible. so that 1.8 inch SSD coming out should be able to plug right into the r1 and record.

Not to be rude, but that seems an absolute impossibility to me that "all future media" will be R1 compatible. Remember that the 1.8" SSD for Epic/Scarlet goes into a module. So...on R1, what module does it go into? This would require them to also design an external module (possibly in the shape of RedDrives) that would take SSD.

* As to "Obsolescence" not longer being "Obsolete", the new media options were are working on will be compatible with RED ONE as well as new brains. I think everyone will be very stoked with what is coming down the pike.

words from Brent. how they implement it, nobody knows but them. But it is stated that all new media will work on r1.

Jarred did state that R1 would be compatible, so whatever it is they are cooking up over at RED seems to be addressing the needs of not only Epic/Scarlet but also the R1. This is good news, especially if it comes out soon as the need is growing. There are really two issues at stake here. Will this solution be lightweight? That's the beauty of the 64GB CF option. No need for a drive for a lot of shooting situations. The other thing I'm intrigued by is what the capacity will be and what kind of form factor it will be put in.

Like everyone else, I'm anxiously awaiting to hear the details on this. I was sold on the 64GB option but I'm keeping an open mind on the possibility of something even better.

I really would like to see an somehow "thicker" module, that replaces the CF Card module on the RED One, where the SSD or whatever new media could slide or click into.

Modular is great, but I hate too many different things attached to the camera.

Agreed! Am hoping its something that doesn't need a cable and doesn't need a bracket to hold it~

I'll add my vote to this, IF they effectively abandon CF, which I think would be a shame.

I already have a CF module on my R1, I have a FW800 reader, I even ended up somehow with a backup CF module. I am trying to slim down my R1, I just bought, and received the 17-50 RPZ and a MBB-1 with a 143mm back allowing me to clip it on the RPZ. Now all I need is the brilliant Actionproducts shoulder mount (http://actionproducts.ch/index.php?cPath=48_43)*, which also serves as a baseplate and allows for a very low position of the camera on the shoulder, and to receive my Bomb EVF. With a 64GB CF card, that would allow for 40 minutes of 4K recording, with my existing module! I'm all for newer and better media options, but we already invested in CF, allowing us to choose what is best for us would be nice.

Cheers,
Damien

* shamless plug for a great company, and great products, whom I am in no way affiliated with, besides being one of their (happy) customers.

OMG I just got a back up for the on board CF reader/writer, I might actually be f**ked for the first time (I got a lot of prizes along the way, the $2500 discount on Accessories, the 10k$ discount on the Epic, despite keeping my R1....), well it´s only 200$... I really really hope whatever they do, they do it soon and properly ;-) (Well I know they wil, but I want soon!)

Curran, same what I think, but dont know if it will work... try to connect a fast SSD instead of the CF module and look if it is mounting without problems.... a SSD module instead of CF module would be highly welcome.....

That's probably not gona work...

Gunleik, yeah... there will be missing a special firmware on the SSD to work probably... but a SSD module would be great on the Red One....

What's a back CF module?

Sorry, just noticed, it's a typo, I meant a backup CF module. I don't think I ordered it, but Red sent it to me, and charged me for it, when my camera returned from the audio board plus CF module upgrade. I though about sending it back, but then decided to keep it as it could come in handy should my CF module fail for some reason. I'd read a few comments about people having bent pins and such.

Anyhow, I like CF cards, I don't want to have to invest more in our R1. I've been planning to purchase the new 1.8" SSDs for Epic in any case, but I'd also like to have the possibility of using CF cards on Epic but mainly with our R1.

Cheers,
Damien
