  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

hey guys, i've done some aerial shot the other day and some of my shots have came up with a weird effect-problem...
a kind of unwanted stereoscopic effect

take a look at these pic, first is about 50% res, second 100%, third 300%

these are from a 3k shot with scarlet, latest update done, black shading done the day before,

SHUTTER 1/250
FOCAL LENGTH: 24mm
APERTURE: f13.4
FOCUS DISTANCE: 430mm
there is a small grade on it, but the meta data looks the same, i played with grading and dint help at all...

From all my shots of this day, maybe the 1/4 had this weird effect...

Could you guys help me on this... ? in a good world, i would not like to have to deal with this effect anymore... hehe

thanks for your time
cheers
felix

I would look to the lenses. The up side is, you can repair this (for the most part) in After Effects by separating the color channels and offsetting them in the direction of the skew. This assumes the shift is always in the same direction though.

I've had the same thing happen on a shoulder-mounted shot, not moving around. It's not a lens issue. Something with the camera. I sent an R3D and log file to Red, but never really got an answer. Fortunately the shot ended up not being the only take and not being needed.

I doubt I was using a stabilizer, as it was likely with the 16-35mm canon lens. The whole clip was bad, but it was visible in the display and I could easily reboot.

here is a image. My problem was isolated to part of the screen.

Not sure if Michael's issue is the same as the OP's... Michael's looks like a firmware/processing glitch that was solved by re-booting. The way R3D files seem to be encoded is with color channels separated and it is also seems to be stored/arranged/encoded in sections or segments. So, for some reason something was off on a particular segment. As if the green channel is offset by a few frames.

In the aerial footage in the original post, it looks like it could be the same issue, but also looks like it could be a chromatic shift brought on by optical factors -- combinations of lens, dome, vibrations... Hard to tell from the images provided. I'm leaning toward it being the same issue as Michael's as the effect seems to be localized to a defined region of the image. Appears on the boats and building, but not on the cars to the right of the frame.

Hopefully both of you guys with these respective incidents have filed a ticket with RED and supplied Log files from the cameras... That's the best way to get these problems diagnosed and fixed.

hi Jeff, I would agree that I'm not 100% convinced I had the same problem. I did not file a ticket, largely be I suspect my problem was user error and not a glitch with the camera. I spend my day running through the bush, chasing animals (at times putting my camera down and helping capture them) and jumping in and out of helicopters (I did actually did jump a few times from 10-15ft, first dropping the camera to a friend below who caught it) There could have been a whole page of possible contributions such as loose lens, knocking the camera. Static from the chopper etc?? Because it was noticeable in my LCD I was able to quickly correct the problem with no harm.

Is there any possibility of radio-frequency interference getting in if there is a lot of two-way radio going on. It was an occasional issue with MiniDV cams near microwave towers or paging transmitters a few years back and the ship tactical radar interference in the news camera footage from the Falklands War was well apparent.

Thx for your help guys, I guess since no red team answered my question here ill have to send them a ticket ...
thanx for your time, ill let know if I have an answer !

cheers
felix

Wow! Someone who tosses their EPIC around and drops it from 15 feet hoping their friend is a good catcher! Now that is something I didn't think I would hear. Good tests for the EPIC build though!

I just came up with an idea, I started the camera while in the chopper and engine running ... lots of vibration..
maybe its because of that !! the 2 other days I was there I started the camera before jumping in the helicopter...!
what do you think redteam?!?
