Hi Everyone, I wanted to see if anyone knows how this guy pulls off these unique in camera flares and refractions on certain shots. I know you can do flares in post, but these look like they are all done in camera. Examples are on: .21, .23, .54, and the coolest one is on .36, where is has a gold flare bouncing off the ring into camera (he has them throughout this video though). He seems to control them very well, they aren't overpowering, yet artistically placed in the composition of the shot perfectly. Any ideas? https://vimeo.com/112862422

He's probably free lensing/lens whacking. It's where you disconnect the lens from the camera body...moving it farther away gets things closer in focus, moving it closer makes things farther away more in focus. You could also have 2 separate planes in focus at the same time too. This technique was also used on the latest SNL intro.

You think he is using just that technique to achieve the in camera flares? Is this the intro you are referring to: https://vimeo.com/107482286. I have seen people use flashlights shining into the lens or broken glass filters to create unique in camera flares. Do you think he is using a combination of these to achieve his flares or some other type of technique? The one with the gold ring being filed at .36 is the most interesting (to me at least).

Interesting, thanks for the input everyone. I will definitely experiment with some of these techniques.
