  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

underwater housings

I need something like this for waterskiing. Anyone have any samples from use in water? Anyone have any issues? I won't lie, i'm a bit hesitant to take a camera into the water in any type of housing.

I've only ever used it in swimming pools, but everything is well made and seems super durable. It can be a bit awkward to hold and focus, but for the money there's nothing else like it.

We make a PVC version that is pretty lightweight and relatively inexpensive.

EWAs are great for wet weather and such, but can get pretty awkward for actual underwater shooting as the buoyancy changes even with slight differences in depth because it shrinks and expands as you go up and down.

Ours is lightweight so pretty buoyant by itself for shooting at the surface (surfing, your waterskiing, in wet weather, etc.) but for actual underwater you simply attach a weight and it is perfectly neutral and doesn't change buoyancy. It is also pretty easy to mount on a tripod (either above or below water) - I'm not sure how you would do that with the EWA.

The Picture below shows it with an aluminum frontplate, but we also make it with an acrylic frontplate for even lighter weight.

Hey Mike,

Yes you can use one no problem, but I much prefer the use of a Monitor, either way the A-RED is really a great housing, at $995 you won't find any better solutions, great for protection of your rig against heavy Rain, Dust, Holy Powder, Mud etc.

Really good on Surf waters, and also underwater shooting with in the depth allowed, I love mine, and I'll be using it extensively in this film I am DPing in the Mauritius for the next few months.

Unless you are a professional Scuba Diver and need to go really DEEP, don't even bother with anything else.

I would never put this into the surf... anyone who been in one knows the forces and how much moving there is,... and even tho this is a great solutions for pools,... and just around the surface,... the plastic bag is a pain in the ass on holding, setting up stuff,... yeah its "cheap" compared to other solutions and smaller for traveling and packing but not use it for a whole production,... just few shots,...

end of discussion :wink5: I'm sure all of those other underwater shooters would agree..... :nonod:

Ketch,

Any experience in Lakes? Care to give any feed back as to just literally floating on the surface to get a few shots of water skiers and wake boarders passing by?

Like with every piece of equipment one needs to get used to it, no piece of gear or accessory is without it's pro & cons.

But I disagree on your assessment, as if you buy a Splash Bag, this is the best there is, but that is if you know what you buy, this is not a under water hosing with controls and a solid built UWH casing were you screw in tight your slider and your camera... But also costs a fraction, and has it's really good uses.

It has been used on any waters, and on serf too, yes I agree that if the serf gets ruff then it is not the best tool to use, but if the waters are not as agitated, then it's perfect.

Like all things, one must know what He/She is doing and decide what is the best tool to use.

I have taken this on few shoots with Pro-Scuba Divers and they also made use of it on some close to surface shots not to rebuild their Gates system, and they were very happy with the shots they got, again, can't compare oranges with apples here, but it does the job very well for what it is meant to do.

I am more likely to also get a Under Water Housing for the Weapon, but this it has been serving a good purpose.

Jeffrey,

I/we have used it on any waters, from Cold/Heated Pools, Rivers, Lakes Clear Mediterranean Sea waters to darker Ocean waters, it performs great, both on surface and several feet under!

You can decide how much Air to leave in to make it float more or less, or add weight to make it's buoyancy as needed, on surface, you must always use caution, as while is a well built Plastic Splash Bag, it is exactly that, a Plastic Splash Bag, and the gear can take a pounding form the Waves if too strong, this is the same for River currents, waves on Lakes created by Boats or Jet Skies and more so in the Ocean waves especially if cut under the powerful crush point of a high wave.

If you know you are going to be in extreme and powerful waves then you ned more protective accessory such a real Under Water Housing, if not, you are good with this, again, keeping careful consideration on the depths limitations.

Does anyone rent the ewa-marine RED-A splash bag in Los Angeles? This splash bag could be a good solution to a couple shoots I have coming up here in LA.
