Fellow Bubble Blowers,
I just had the extreme privilege of attending a 4K screening of Samsara at the Landmark Theatre in West Los Angeles. I am still high from that buzz, trying to describe my gut reactions, the very visceral and emotional impact of the experience.
Without a doubt, some of the most brilliant, visually arresting, and heart-wrenching cinematographic stuff I have ever seen, any of you who have access to a 4K theatre, please, go see it. These folks are leading the way, by the very longest of shots.
So, how to get that impact in a liquid environment, big challenge, tough act to follow, some here just might be up to it, methinks.
Mark, whatever you do, on that very big project you are about to embark on, preserve those R3D files intact. What I saw today, what JJ has been harping on for so many years, it's all clear to me now.
Frazier,
Try chainmale for Jellies!
Frazier,Have you filmed them before wearing chainmail?
Chainmail? For real?
I've got chainmail but rarely wear it, unless I'd actually be feeding sharks. Some of our Australian friends should have a good answer for this one.
Best,
Frazier
Frazier,
I was just kidding about the CM LOL
I would think just a good covering of neoprene would be ok.
Ok, looks like I'll be in Australia filming Box Jellies in shallow water, I'm thinking I should be careful with these things that pack a powerful punch. Anyone here filmed them before here? Waters not very clear and waist deep water apparently.
Want to do it safely, suggestions?
...would love to hear from the Australian Bubble Blowers, maybe they don't go anywhere near these things...
... One never knows when an extreme allergic reaction never before encountered could ruin the day...
We get those little buggers in Hawaii on the right moon cycle. I once came across a surfer stung by a boxxie while out on my boat and gave him a ride to the lifeguard station. We had vinegar in the first aid kit which is supposed to neutralize any remaining nematocysts, so we put that on him while we called for help. I never found out what exactly he went through after I handed him over to the EMT's, but after only ten minutes his neck was the same diameter as his head and he was having hard time breathing. He also got stung on the hands since he got the jelly under the neck of his suit and couldn't get it out without touching it. After that incident, I did a bit of research and found out that many people get stung by nematocysts on or trapped in their suit, so it's probably a good idea to rinse before you take it off. Also, an Aussie instructor I worked with recommended the SafeSea product, and on the manufacturer website it states that the product's been tested to be effective against box jellies. Hard to know for sure if it works or if it's false security, but I've used it a few times on my face when diving at the right time of month for box jellies to drift in. Seems like you will have a good chance of staying safe though, since you'll be looking for the critters instead of swimming around oblivious!Ok, looks like I'll be in Australia filming Box Jellies in shallow water, I'm thinking I should be careful with these things that pack a powerful punch. High-profile commercial was shot with DeepX and Nikonos 15mm for 2012 London Olympic sponsor and projected on a giant screen during the event. I posted one of the out-takes kindly forwarded to me by Phil Barthropp on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/48845333
Box jellies swarm off our beaches in summer often by the thousands. They are relatively easy to film but you need to be very careful naturally. Another deadly relative is the Irukandji jellyfish is a tiny and extremely venomous cousin which probably sting more people each year. Frazier if you need any help co-ordinating your shoot off north Queensland I would be pleased to assist. If you want to film in 3D then naturally I have Deep Atom on stand by ;-) We often utilise the services of a James Cook University scientist Dr Jamie Seymour who is a world expert on both of these animals. We had him on a drama series "Reef Doctors" which I shot earlier this year off Port Douglas.Ok, looks like I'll be in Australia filming Box Jellies in shallow water, I'm thinking I should be careful with these things that pack a powerful punch.
