  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So I'm not sure that product or expertise translates all that well to what we are doing with Red cameras, and I wouldn't expect anything like that kind of implementation for a very long time. I think you will see 6K and maybe the 9K Monstro Red cameras before that happens.

My best guess, based on what they've been doing over the last ten years, is they'll be going after the prosumer Scarlet/Canon market. If Red implements electronic lens control through RS232, it won't take them long to bring a housing with electronic pistol grips to market. If they do go ahead, their product will be out by this spring, at the latest, I expect.

Price-wise, my guesstimate is the 10-12K range, they have usually tried to keep the prices of their housings within reasonable range of the price of the camera. What might give everyone else pause for thought, Pawel A/John E/Mike H, for example, is that their product will very likely work with Epic as well.

Yes, but this is pure speculation on their part...given RED does not even have a product as described and this can go on for years....but until such product is available (i have my doubts RED is going to produce RS232 control as they have stated they are going after the pro cine market)....so sure, amphibico can say what they want, but if the product doesn't exist....then it's a moot point. My guess is someone (maybe amphibico or ?) will device a cannon mount with all those controls via a remote is best solution. But again, pure speculation. Today we have only a few tools available.

John, if you want aperture control with G lenses (e.g. Nikon 14-24/2.8, or any of the Tokinas) you need this one:

I used to use an adapter by Fotodiox with Nikon 17-35/2.8D on Canon 5D Mik II before Canon allowed manual iris in video mode. They work. Some of the cheaper ones aren't manufactured well enough to preserve infinite focus, but Fotodiox and 16-9 are ok in my experience.

Tom, Amphibicam was $100k as far as I remember. And, this was well before George Bush printed a few trillion dollars :smilielol5:

Has anyone seen or tried this? Apparently allows the use of Nikon lenses on a Canon camera.

John, I shoot time lapse exclusively with Nikon lenses on Canon 5D2, not underwater though. I use 16x9 Inc adapter and it works well....above water, that is.

I think that rather than discussing physical properties of lenses, it is much more useful to focus on underwater port/lens combinations. Have you shot any zone charts underwater? If so, what the results were? Have you managed to resolve more than standard definition with your range of underwater ports?

Hi John, We use the Fotodiox adaptors with Nikon AI and AIS lenses and V3 adaptors for G Lenses on 5D mk2's. There are a few of these adaptors about, the better ones are fine if theres no play in them, the cheaper ones seem to have too much play so rotate a little in the mount when focusing. The reason for use of Nikon lenses on 5D mk2 for Timelapse is the Aperture needs to be fixed or flicker can occur. There is a trick you can use by rotating Canon lenses in the mount to fix the aperture whilst pressing the DOF button but thats another story.

Deep Atom nearly finished

Deep Atom nearly finished

I am very excited to receive the latest images of my Deep Atom which has now been anodised and is ready for pool testing next week. John and his team at Gates has done an extraordinary job creating this system and I look forward to using Deep Atom on 3D productions into the future. I plan on doing my own sea trials early next year. These images are the actual Deep Atom without hand controls and transvideo monitor which John is currently working on........

Very sleek Ross, looks like something you'd expect from the Gates team. Best of luck with your sea trials, I'm sure Osprey Reef figures heavily in that equation.

Hi Ryan, welcome! I just was asking on another part of the forum about using an adapter for my Nikon lenses with either Canon or PL mount. Seems like the Nikon/Canon mount wins out, an I ordered the Epic with the Canon Ti mount...

John, I ordered the 160 extension ring to use the Tokina 10-17. What will I need for either the Tokina 11-16 or the Nikkor 17-35?
i also have the Tokina 16-24 on my D700 and it is beautiful! I may use that over the 17-35. Any thoughts?
thanks in advance, Ron

Comments please. If my assessment if correct, will you still shoot Canon lenses underwater?

John, just turning over a Canon lens in my hands here. The focus and zoom rings are not geared as per cine lenses, but they are grooved for easy grip/operation. Could you not modify the LGD gears with slightly smaller, closely spaced teeth so as to achieve a reasonably secure mate between gear and focus/zoom rings? Or a friction coating of some kind?

That would leave auto-focus and iris control to the RedMote, zoom and focus manually controlled, much less cumbersome than discussed as above, IMO.

You are no doubt way ahead of me here, would just like to hear your thoughts.

Thanks

Curious what you are driving at here? Putting gears on still lenses is easy, with off the shelf solutions for both the cinema gear pitch/tooth spacing which is a metric spacing called .8 module and there are also a lot of them From the still housing manufacturers with a little different gear pitch. Some are machined to a press fit, others are split and then have a screw to tighten down after you slide the gear on. Theres also a thing called the zip gear which is like a nylon wire tie with teeth that can easily accommodate any of the normal sized lenses. And with the boom in dSLR video there are a bunch of sources for those lens gears.

The hard part is on the housing side, making it so you can line up the gears with those on various lenses.

We make gear rings for any lens we can get our hands on. I've a safe full of Canon lenses to work on for just that purpose.

I did not mean to mislead anyone about controlling focus / iris via the REDMOTE. Focus absolutely can be controlled via the DEEP EPIC lens gearing. Iris is solely via REDMOTE.

Hi Ron! If you are going with a Gates housing, I'm not sure that's the strategy I'd use based on my knowledge of the system. Tokina 11-16/2.8 and 10-17/3.5-4.5 are both "G-like" lenses, and any housing solution that could operate the little Iris lever on the 16-9 adapter would be an impressive one. If you must use Nikon mount Tokina lenses, maybe Optitek Nikon Mount is a better solution. Or just rebuy in Canon, and control Iris on Redmote or User keys.

That sounds like an Aquavideo solution...

Hi Ron,

You'll need the PE286 for the 11-16. I've not had the Nikkor 17-35 here yet, nor the 16-24, but am expecting the latter soon to make gear rings.

How do users feel using a Canon or Fujinon 2/3 Wide lenses lens with the Abekas or IBE convertor on Epic would work for them ? Any one tried it ?

Our tests show the Long lenses such as the HJ40 long zoom work better than expected. Im wondering if this might be a suitable use for the 2/3 lenses and adaptor underwater also.
