Underwater Trigger

Thanks Johnny and Tom for the reply, What a bummer! I will contact red about it. They say it works in the user manual?

Here's what it says in the manual, Epic Ops guide 1.7.01, page 184;

"3. Connect a SYNC cable P/N 790-0154 to each camera and connect as desired to your 3rd party device.
Yellow connector is for Timecode.
Green connector is for Genlock.
White connector is multi-purpose (example: for remote trigger for start/stop recording)."

Also a welcome to you Simon...

Tom, what are you or anyone for that matter---what can you use to trigger it if using the sync cable. I have the older Origo switch that worked for the R1, but the connections are different and won't connect to the RED sync cable.

Anybody?

Hi all,

I am now successfully running two batteries on my Deep Red, after replacing the drive cradle with an additional battery mount from Hawk-Woods. The camera is fitted with SSD, currently using two 128GB cards.
The extra battery is running in parallel with the original Gates/RED battery mount (I had it fitted at Hawk-Woods by their technician). I have not thoroughly tested performance, but after a recent one hour dive I still had 87% power left after having the camera powered up the whole time. The batteries are two brand new SWIT D-8111S for RED, 140WH, same performance as the RED Brick but cheaper and with better chargers and other accessories. Unfortunately I only get battery status from the RED plate, but since the camera draws 50% equally on the two batteries I still get a correct reading in the RED monitor.

cheers,
Amund

That's pretty cool if you stick a 256gb card in there it will last forever!!

George:- Have you called Pawel, he may have a solution?

Johnny, don't know the answer to that question, according the latest release docs, remote trigger is active via aforementioned cable, apparently folks are having problems with it. Has anyone confirmed this with the 2.02 firmware?

Amund, the Red Brick, or IDX equivalent, is definitely the way to go for Epic underwater. On a recent shoot, I was able to do two 75-minute dives on a single charge, with juice to spare, amazing when you consider the 55-minute or so max discharge time that those batteries delivered on the R1. I don't have that kind of confidence in the RedVolts.

Here's a question for Gates. John, just received my RedMote, amazed at what that little box can do re cam control, still looking hard for what it can't do. My question, when I saw the Deep Epic at DEMA, I didn't notice controls other than for the top face of the RedMote. When it's connected to the Epic, it will turn on via Epic power-up. When it is disconnected, however, you have to toggle the sliding thumb switch on the right side of the RedMote, something I didn't see on your housing. Ditto for the still/motion switch on the left side of the unit. Perhaps I didn't look closely enough, can you confirm?

Cheers

Amund...what do you mean by using two 128gb SSD cards? not two connected? or you mean to say that you have two cards.....i don't see where/how you can connect two cards to the SSD recorder.

Ah, yes, sorry for the confusion: I just open and close the housing reaaaally quickly to switch cards :)
No, what I meant to say was that I don't have the 256GB yet, just two 128GB which are of course only one at a time. However, I have never found recording time to be a problem, but battery life is. Or was...

If I still wish to record to the old drive, I use the Element Technica cradle that has a V-mount connector which fits in the second battery plate and connect via drive cable as usual.

I think he meant an ENG on-the-go SSD swap scenario, unless there is some way to mount two SSD units to Epic, maybe in place of the DSMC side handle? News to me, pitching/rolling boats in gusting oceanic salt spray and heavy seas can be pretty brutal on electronic equipment of any description. That would be an interesting development though.

Confirm?

Don't agree with you on batteries, redvolts are 30 watt hours so the quad module gives you 120 watt hours and you only get 140 with a brick so about the same but you get the quadruple redundancy with redvolts. Besides the size and pain in the ass cable with the bricks, you also have airline restrictions with batteries over 100 watt/hours. The quad module (part of all epic-x stage 2and 3 packages) will solve a lot of issues when it gets here. Red bricks are also notorious for connector pin problems and can be jarred loose from the plate. The quad module should be more secure and again you have the redundancy of multiples if one were jarred loose.

And quoting another thread:

"I love the redvolts - have a stack of them.

Economics are fine too, given that you'd be foolish to call the camera complete without the side handle IMHO.

3 x Red bricks (7hrs run time), Brook's APU plate, Red charger - $2600
3 x Redvolt four packs (6hrs run time), four travel chargers - $2750"

And Tom, I can answer your Gates question, it does have a nice cam control to activate the redmote - as does the Aquavideo external redmote case and the internal/backplate redmote controller version as well.

d on a rotating, multiple dive shoot, without a dog's breakfast of wires, chargers, and outlets, mixed in with a swirling, salty, wind-swept ocean?

Travel charger weighs nothing, quad charger is coming and probably a third of the size and weight of a vbrick charger.

Tom, yes the Bricks fall under TSA "large LiIon" batts....so you are limited to carry on of three only. I think i usually carry on 4 or 5....wait---i didn't say that. i meant only 3. Hence the reason i think RED is thinking in the future...no limits on the smaller batts....you can carry on a hundred or more i you like based on TSA rules. AND, i ALWAYS carry copy of the TSA regs when flying so i can show any agent the rules....thankfully i've never been asked about my batts...but i'm sure that will change in the near future.

I know you went to school in canada, but how does 140 watt hours fall under 100? :-)

In Canada, time passes slowly, we get 1.4 hours for every one hour of Minnesota time.:coolgleamA:

Post above deleted so as not to mislead anyone. Still think that mass of cables and chargers is a disadvantage tho...

One of the controls is a switch to turn power on/off on the REDMOTE

Hi,

I have an underwater shoot with an Epic this week. We have to trigger the camera and have build the Schmitt trigger and plugged it into the Sync 4 pin lemo socket on the "Brain". We have set the input to GIO and to Record Start in the USER KEYS, But it does not trigger the camera? We are using the latest build (Beta) version.

Anyone got any insights on why this is not working (ASAP!)?

Thanks in advance.

We have remote trigger working in DEEP EPIC. But only because we discovered the pinout information in the EPIC manual is not correct, and confirmed by RDCC engineers.

As soon as the Canon mount arrives, going to take an L-series 16-35 underwater. Just wondering if anyone has experience with that lens, u/w or top?

Thanks all.
