Perhaps an aspheric design, after the fashion of a Fathom Optics glass dome?

well, from the pics posted it doesn't look aspheric....but maybe the new design is....?? I know in 3d there are have been some revolutionary breakthroughs with glass design for shooting through a "sort of" port.....and as i understand not only complicated in design, but quite costly.

Pawel,
looking at your posted photos of cineport, i don't see anything that stands out in form factor (maybe that's not the right word/s)....what i mean is anything that is different than a standard dome port design. Maybe you had it cut so it's not as large an arc, and of course it's a much larger dome than what's considered normal....in 6", 8" and 9.25" range....but are you saying that the GLASS itself has some better build or chemical makeup quality than say Subal glass? I'm still trying to see how you have come up with something "new" that would add considerable and measurable quality difference. I would have expected you maybe came up with a design that is not a true dome and is has a some-what rectangular design...maybe something like the old Amphibico f900 housing....i think that's what i recall being a very different design....at any rate, i think you have the u/w community's attention and waiting......i'll act like a RED head and ask: "when will we see more?" and if it is all as you say, i'm sure you have a lot of us waiting for your offer to Gates and Aqua so we have that option to shoot even better images.

Jonny, CinePort has been available for over 4 years now.
To my knowledge it is the best dome ever made. What's different? As I mentioned, the devil is in the detail: multiple improvements attributing to vastly superior performance.

You have not seen the new stuff that's coming. It's on track for announcement and release in December. I will not disclose any information that would compromise patent application, so please do not ask. It is coming and the good news is that you will be able to order straight away with immediate delivery.

Anybody up for Baja in March? Multiple Epics available for said testing.

Real comparative/scientific testing should be done in a controlled environment like a swimming pool or dive test tank and somewhere where the results can be screened and evaluated quickly so testing and retesting can be done efficiently. Traveling to an exotic place and figuring out how it works and how to get the most out of a setup is a recipe for wasting time and effort that should be put into finding the best subjects and capturing them in the best way possible. I speak from the experience of doing it the wrong way too many times :-).

I get really tired of hearing people say this or that worked better or worse when they have shot in different locations, different lenses, ports, etc.

I'm kind of with Johnny on this. I'm from Missouri "the showme state" so I'll wait to see it before getting too excited.

I can see how precise positioning, and proper external and internal shading can make a significant difference but these techniques are pretty well known and wouldn't seem to have the "spark of innovation" that would entitle them to patent protection.

If you're feeling tired, take an aspirin, lie down, and stay there until you're rested.

These units have been tested by the various manufacturers, they already know what they can do. There's only so much value to be gained from shooting a focus chart off the deep end.

Getting together with other shooters at real dive sites provides for mutually valuable knowledge exchange, some hands-on with a variety of equipment in a field environment, plus a great opportunity to share beer and stories. It's what makes life fun.

Plus, there are some great subjects in Baja, might even get a money shot or two.

totally agree with you on that, Mike

patience gentemen, patience....it is coming :)

I'm keen to work with other manufacturers.

Pawel, but will you make it available as a bayonet style mount for Gates users? If you have it ready for order, i'm assuming you'll have multiple options for mounting to different u/w housings yes?
It's probably a question for Gates, not me.
Why don't you wait until the end of December? You may not want to use Gates housing ever again :)

Here's another ROUGH CUT trailer for upcoming INDEPENDENT doc we shot. Keep in mind, no color correction or editing beyond rough cuts....we are just looking at different ways to cut and what folks think of each and then will make a move on the best rough cut....but 3 or 4 more rounds to go:

Very exciting stuff Johnny. If you're not letting any cats out of bags, did you actually capture a birthing event, or does that happen in the deeps with these animals?

Apparently they give birth to potentially dozens of pups (ovoviviparous, eggs hatch inside the womb), would be spectacular to see that.

Nothing like that Tom. We "thought" we might see it with some of the giant bellies on the females and with "movement" of the bellies as well. but i'd say the story carries incredibly well on this doc AND plenty of excitement.....ups/downs; hit's/misses

The wide-angle whale shark shots alone are pretty special. Having been in the water with lots of them, that's not what caught my attention though. The general viewing public is a different story I'm sure, good drama there.

Above all though, those near misses with divers and sweeping giant whale tails are breath-taking, holy shit, had me on the edge of my seat, some serious thumps there, hope you had Medevac available.

The other shot that really caught me, was the topside sunset/rise panorama of giant Pacific surge breaking over those prehistoric rock formations, got a profound sense of the wild remoteness of the site. That's golden stuff Johnny.

Keep it coming, I foresee a huge movie here!

love the galapagos. what time period were you shooting over? love that shot where the whale shark swipes the reef - poor devil.

Darwin Island is where we shot all of this.....and the breaking waves were on Darwin's Arch....a magnificent location loaded with life. We were there in September for two weeks and then again late October another 2 weeks. Every whale shark had a definite personality. MOST did not react at all to the tagging and some were incredibly wary of humans in the water and would run from the scientists/divers.....as you saw, one scientist got hit by the tail of a large animal while trying to get a DNA sample....the swipe of the tail actually cut through her wetsuit and cut her leg and bruised it quite badly. The shark that brushed the reef was completely not having anything to do with us....looks like a light brush against the reef, but know that this animal is 15meters in length and the barnicles that fly up after the tail brushes against the reef are about an inch in diameter and will cut you quite easily AND i would have to pry one off with a knife to get it off....

All and all a very eye opening trip and many shots i was able to get while using a new scooter with my R1 mounted on a rotating camera mount.

Johnny,

Can you tell me about the scooter? I need to use a similar setup soon but don't wanna use my old Aquazep cave diving unit which is huge and unwieldy. What did you use, do you have any photos of set up? Please give as much detail as you can, including by PM if you prefer.

Thanks,

Juan Viernes es el hombre, eagerly awaiting, Thanks!

remotely triggering an Epic... help!

remotely triggering an Epic... help!

Hi,

I have an underwater shoot with an Epic this week. We have to trigger the camera and have build the Schmitt trigger and plugged it into the Sync 4 pin lemo socket on the "Brain". We have set the input to GIO and to Record Start in the USER KEYS, But it does not trigger the camera? We are using the latest build (Beta) version.

Anyone got any insights on why this is not working (ASAP!)?

Thanks in advance.

George, I'm unaware of ANYONE having remote trigger working. Sounds like you should contact the tech's at RED, but my guess is that you won't get a remote trigger working until RED does some firmware work to enable it to work. I can't recall to well the discussions on this, but it comes down to something RED i believe needs to do before remote trigger will work as far as i last heard--hence, no remote trigger devices available or selling for Epic...but calling RED would likely get you a quick and reliable answer.....

I'm a soon to be owner of a Scarlet X and I'll hopefully be getting it underwater sooner rather than later, so I just wanted to say hi. I recognise a few names here and hopefully I'll get to know the rest of you soon :)

(Now to read all 66 pages.....)

Cheers, Simon
