The time has come for this dreaded question:

- Is anyone experimenting with a RED 3D setup underwater?

Two Gates or two AquaVideo housings next to each other, can it be done? Not for close-ups obviously, but before that time when someone introduces a dual Epic housing, can we shoot RED stereoscopic in the wet dimension with current housings?

(needless to say I am in contact with a feature film production who is dabbling with doing everything in 3D. I don't like this development, but I should at least come up with some sort of solution!)

Putting two housings side by side probably wouldn't work well. Even the AquaVideo, which I think is the narrowest, is nine inches diameter so the closest intraocular would be nine inches which is huge. The old rule of thumb is that your subject distance should be 30 times the intraocular so over 20 ft at a minimum. You can push that for short periods but nine inches is really big. You could do much better with 2 reds in one housing - maybe 5 inches? But even that is pretty big IO. We are getting down to about 2.5 inches with 1 chip 1080p cameras and that is good for most non-macro underwater.

Dj roller has a huge housing for red with beamsplitter which is the only way to get the tiny (.5" ?) IO you want for macro. There's a reason we are all anxious for epic/scarlet.

Actually, what I need to shoot for this particular film is a whale shark, so maybe it could work as a one-off?
Handling a dual RED-3D-UW-behemoth is another matter...

The problem with hooking 2 housings together besides the intraocular is getting them properly aligned - extremely difficult. Much easier and maybe not much more expensive to build it side by side which would also simplify connecting the two cameras via the USB ports for proper sync. Birger also has the ability to sync lenses - although for that type of shot you could probably just get by with iris.

I could probably build one/ convert an old housing for $10-12k or build it and do a month or so rental for $5k.

Red ONE UNDERWATER HOUSING FOR SALE

Red ONE UNDERWATER HOUSING FOR SALE

RED ONE Underwater Housing for sale

Housing:
*original #2 AquaVideo housing that has been completely modified
*I had the modifications done as such: Element Technica took my original AV housing and modified it to accommodate Cinema Gearing for focus/Iris as well as add a Origo record/stop switch, dual battery capability and very well balanced housing.
*The final touch was made by adding a Gates LCD monitor with Lemo connection bulkhead conector--same as DEEP RED. THIS IS A MUST for following a subject underwater and the housing has a 2.5" shade cover so you can view the image in bright sunlight.
*current gearing setup will accommodate the RED 18-50 and Arri 2.0 14mm prime. Other gears can be EASILY made to accommodate ANY lens you like or Gear Rings for those lenses.
*Housing is longer (as i like it) to allow for three point contact....so you can hold it against your shoulder for stability or push out in front of you--however you like to shoot, but I think you'll like the 3 point contact.

*Housing Price: $11,500

FS 5 week epic-x Rental from SN206 ~$3500 prepaid. Be the first!

(First paragraph): I am an early REDONE owner - Serial Number 206 and have already paid deposit on my epic-x stage 2 upgrade. Since I use the camera primarily for my underwater housing development work and underwater shooting - it spends a lot of time just sitting on the shelf. Therefore I am considering selling 4 blocks of 5 weeks of rental on my Epic-X - $3500 for each block of 5 weeks. (More details in the other thread.)

The housing with the new controls are working like a dream. So easy, housing is balanced so well, I can push it through the water with ONE finger. Very stable and balanced considering the glass dome.

Getting some beautiful imaging for the Florida Keys and Key West display at DEMA. Can't wait to shoot the Tiger Sharks and Dolphins next week, make sure your passport is good.

Jim, I implemented the Birger control for iris, focus, and initialization functions - using our circuit board. Life really is pretty simple with the Birger and this control. Being able to use any lens with no gears and such is really sweet. I always thought Birger canon was the ultimate u/w solution and I think Peppermill and Frazier have proved this. We also added an electronic trigger switch since the red trigger button isn't too robust.

BTW. The combination of 8" glass dome, and the heavier front plate that holds it, adds a few pounds of neg buoyancy (and a bit front heavy) so we had to add a buoyancy tube to offset it on the standard housing (like yours).

any experience with shooting underwater with tripod in ocean? What tripod to use? Fluid-head? Thanks

I don't use fluid head and very few people do. Howard Hall does a lot of locked off shots, maybe you can ask him. I'm not a big fan of locked off shots underwater. It just makes little sense to me when you can fly the camera through the water, use the skill, perfect buoyancy and smooth motion.
For macro shots I made a custom tripod out of titanium tubes and custom-made grips.

Otherwise, just like Mike said

PAWEL> our product requires static placement of camera in vertical orientation.

How about using cheap $200 aluminum tripod for photography, since the weight of the camera is much less in the water and smaller tripod/head could support it? Or Ocean tripod by Gitzo, little more expensive but could be reused many times http://www.gitzo.com/cms/site/gitzo/cache/offonce/home/products/tripods/ocean

Second question, do all underwater housing cases for RED come with tripod screw hole for horizontal and VERTICAL orientation?

Thanks
Radim

Radim: If you look at the picture from frazier's post 271, he is actually shooting vertically and if you look closely the left side is downward and has a tripod plate for a Daiwa Fluid head which we have been using - we mounted one of the plates on both the bottom and the left side so we can switch quickly to either a vertical or horizontal orientation. You can see it in normal configuration in post 268. While that housing is about perfectly neutral/balanced with the standard acrylic domes, the glass dome is much heavier and requires a ballast tube. (Ballast tube is not necessary on the PVC housings, since you can simply use a smaller ballast weight which is normally about 13 lbs.)

We have just recently started shooting vertical's but one of my other customer's - Peppermill Casinos has the same setup and has shot a lot of verticals which they use in their virtual aquarium and virtual "windows on the world" throughout the casino/hotel in RENO.

The tripod holes aren't necessarily standard that way but we have made it very easy to add the appropriate plates on our housings.

That housing is one of our four rental units. Frazier has been shooting quite a bit with it this summer since I blew out my eardrum and had surgery on it last month - about another month before I can dive.

We could make you another one or sell you that one at a discount - contact me via PM or my email if you are interested.

It is a little out of date but you can download the .pdf brochure at:

http://www.aquavideo.com/pdfs/RED1HousingBrochure309.pdf

AS far as tripods, you might want to stick with a little heavier duty tripod just for stability, partly just because of the bigger mounting plate. You can find the old bogens quite cheap on ebay/craigslist.

Good info Michael. I am not quite ready to do the diving yet, just doing my research. Will keep you in mind when we need to rent housing.

Nice installation in the Peppermill Casinos. Is that 1080p split using splitter, or is that actual 3K or 4k footage?

Thanks

Very nice Frazier!

Reminds me of a similar buddy I used to have at the Eagle wreck in Islamorada, hopefully he's still there...
