  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Underrated Movies

Wow! Now do I feel the Phillistine with my pick :-)

Lots of good suggestions here for me to research, might need to finally get on Netflix

More like Movie Madness in SE Portland... because Netflix also overlooks most of these films.

Interesting to see how diverse tastes are in a 6 page thread... ok, ignoring masterpieces and classics and sticking to "under appreciated"

COMEDY
"Easy Money" by far Rodney Dangerfield's BEST comedy.

DRAMA
"Macon County Line" - I've hated cops ever since.

FANTASY
"Legends" Tim Curry is absolutely brilliant and Mia Sara is in her prime :)

SCI-FI (tie)
"Battle Beyond the Stars".. . my fave Corman film.
"KRULL"

Tim:
I worked on Battle Beyond the Stars. Just as a laborer building sets way back in 1980. The movie was shot at a former lumber yard in Venice, CA, before Venice had its residential and hip business renaissance. James Cameron was the Art Director. You could already see the filmmaker to come in his set and prop designs. For absolutely no budget, the sets were pretty amazing. I learned a ton working on that movie. Those were the days.

Just saw 'Fierce People' with Donald Sutherland and the Twilight girl, it was pretty good, I can't believe it has such a small release!

I completely agree re: "Come and See" -- only minorly flawed by the sort of newsreel propaganda end.

Two other underrated movies concerning war: Turtles Can't Fly, Kandahar -- and a seemingly forgotten minor masterpiece: Forbidden Games.

I would throw in Vodka Lemon as another obscure film that is a great piece of contemporary poetic cinema.

I think "The Mist" was a tad overlooked when it came out last year. I thought it was a great confined quarters paranoia driven horror flick in the tradition of "The Thing".

In Terms of overlooked classics, (at least in terms of my childhood)

"Gleaming the Cube"
"The Secret of My Success"
"Big Trouble in Little China"

On the other end of the spectrum, I can watch "Big Daddy" a million times and still love it. I know its a pretty formulaic Adam Sandler comedy, and even in that genre there are funnier movies, like Happy Gilmore and but something about B.D can always cheer me up.

Just caught "The Mist" and it was great!

I'll add:
1941
Enemy Mine
and one of my all time favorites- Punch Drunk Love

Honestly, in the realm of comedy, I'd say Fired Up! is probably the most underrated teen comedy in quite some time. It made you laugh through actual HUMOR and WIT with actual JOKES, as opposed to so many other American Pie ripoffs that make you laugh with nudity and toilet humor.

Also, The Way of the Gun is one of my favorite modern-western-type suspense flicks. but NOBODY ever seems to have ever seen it.

If we're talking about underrated comedies, I have a soft spot in my heart for "Real Genius" and "Mom and Dad Save the World".

Yeah, I understand that Vilmos agreed to shoot it just because the script really tickled him. Certainly not his usual fair.
