Underrated Movies

The Kid Stays In The Picture - the best feature doc about "the biz".

Hell In The Pacific - John Boorman's masterwork and a fantastic cinematic achievement.

The Man Who Would Be King - John Huston directs this best of all adventure films.

Sunset Boulevard - Billy Wilder's take on "the Biz".

Treasure of The Sierra Madré - Another John Huston picture and Bogart's best performance ever.

That's a nice place to start.

"Hardware" - so glad it's finally out on Blu-ray!! If you love your post-apocalyptic cyberpunk scifi/horror with a groovy soundtrack and a killer robot come to life, this one's for you.

A sleeper & overlooked comedy was "Just Friends" with Ryan Reynolds. Very silly but a LOT of funny parts in that movie.

Lots of good ones being mentioned that I agree with. I'd also add "One Hour Photo", "Stir of Echos", and "Frailty" as three overlooked horror/thrillers. Three of the best from that genre over the past 10 years.

I know that it's tough to call anything Scorsese does as overlooked but I've never thought that "The King of Comedy" ever really got its due. It's truly brilliant work by both Deniro and Scorsese. IMO one of the most honest films about the everymans big hopes and dreams and what happens when they don't quite workout. Also it's so painfully funny throughout. The TV wedding scene that Rupert imagines is freakin priceless!

"Envy" (2004)

I absolutely love this movie yet it got so many bad reviews and most people left the theater upset (there were tears in my eyes, but from laughter). Whats the deal? Christopher Walken alone made this movie an instant win. I thought the editing and music gave the movie an interesting style and the story was funny and well written throughout.
I think it's just misunderstood...

A third vote for "In Bruges" - terrific film.

Don't know if it's underrated, but I never get tired of watching "Zulu". Doesn't seem to get talked about much.

Yes.

Trois couleurs: Bleu

Yes.

3:10 to Yuma.

Yes.

I'd like to add "Multiplicity" (Michael Keaton is brilliant) and "Home Alone" 1&2. I like to rate movies within their genre, so I generally feel most comedies are underrated.

Although it became a cult film, I think Takashi Miike's Audition has never gotten the critical recognition it deserves.

Others: Crank 2, irreversible, Burn after Reading, Marebito, any short film by PFFR (and their music as well), Eraserhead, and american history x.

"Unbreakable"

IMHO, his only masterpiece. Sixth Sense was spoiled for me, though...

:cheers2: Agreed! I was going to post that, but saw you already did. There was at least one sequel planned for it too, but audiences didn't connect with the film. What a shame, it's his best one. I've thought of a couple others that have already been mentioned here. But Unbreakable was the first film that popped into my mind when I opened this thread up.

I actually just watched this again for the first time since it came out. It's probably is his best film (or at least even with The Sixth Sense). I do remember hearing that there were going to be sequels back around the time that it was released. Did it really do that bad in the theaters? Obviously the box office was nowhere near that of the Sixth Sense, but rarely any film's is. I thought Unbreakable did alright.

Well if Wikipedia is anything to go by it grossed $248 million at the box office and $95 million in DVDs over a $75 million budget, so I can't really see how that would be the determining factor in stopping a sequel from going into production.

Gymkata truly is the work of mad genius. Perhaps the greatest unintentional comedy in the history of cinema. I always hoped for a sequel: Gymkata Two: Electric Bogaloo.

Two of the most underrated films I can think of are The Stunt Man and Cutter's Way. The Stunt Man eventually got some notice because of Pete O'Toole's bravura performance, but Cutter's Way (aka Cutter & Bone) was just about lost in the annals of time.

Both are about Vietnam vets and the issue of trust and reality. The Stunt Man is in the end a quest by one man to get another to have hope in humanity. Cutter's Way is about one man's all-consuming anger and his call to bring action and justice to those who have done evil. They are both films of grand metaphor and of rousing entertainment. The Stunt Man takes place amid the production of a movie and Cutter's Way has two main characters who at their hearts are Captain Ahab and Hamlet. Both are great, stirring art.
