I'm curious what movies people think are underrated but still enjoy. Now i don't mean "initially panned but then later recognized as good", there are a lot of movies in that category. I'm talking about movies that by and large aren't talked about but you enjoy.

I'll go first, a bit silly but that's sort of the point. "Girl Next Door", this movie was HORRIBLY marketed as sort of 'American Pie' meets internet porn and it's neither. It's enjoyable on first watch and holds up to repeat viewings, touching story, well acted and shot. Usually found with a stupid cardboard sleeve that seems to indicate Elisha Cuthbert gets naked (again with the marketing). Anyone I talk to who's actually seen it really enjoys it but sort of got flushed down the wrong tube.

I'll try to think of more

One released in the last couple years that I can think of is "In Bruges." Great movie with an incredibly memorable scene (in the park) that is to me...up there on the all time great moments list. Well acted, well shot...great writing... LOTS of people haven't seen it, but it's an excellent movie.

Le mari de la coiffeuse

The hairdressers husband was finally released on DVD this year.

An obscure little film that not many have heard about or seen, but I just love it.

It's not for everybody, but the the characters are memorable, and there is some beautiful camera work.

I think it's worth seeing.

The Player, great film!

I also love LA Story, but not sure if it's underrated or just forgotten by most.

I loved this movie. very funny.

And I am a fan of Girl Next Door as well.

This is an easy one for me.

"Whisper of the Heart" (1995). Produced by Miyazaki.

It's a sublime little film.

LA Story, Loved that one. Lots of little memorable moments, and does reflect how LA has that weird vibe I feel when I go back after not being there in a while.

Room With A View...... Not sure if it is under rated, as I always rated it highly. Numerous scenes that evoked impressionist painting composition. And it oddly is the last film I watched with my wife before she passed (sorry for the downer, but I loved that film and glad we shared it) We caught it on cable late one night.

Good thread Shawn! There are so many that I can think of, however, in my opinion one of the best films of this decade and one no one talks about is Jonathan Glazer's Birth (2004). It's very Kubrickian (for lack of a better word). It's beautifully shot, has great performances, and stays in your mind long after you've finished watching it. At least it did for me. I really hope Glazer does something again soon.

Gotta second Birth there. Great film, with a great performance by Nicole Kidman, and amazing cinematography by Harris Savides.

National Lampoon Barely Legal.

Never heard of this film before and saw it the other day. Good story that was really positive and very funny in spots. Kind of like a revenge of the nerds feel.

A third vote for "In Bruges" - terrific film.

Don't know if it's underrated, but I never get tired of watching "Zulu". Doesn't seem to get talked about much.

'The Big Picture' with Kevin Bacon.

Kind of got the ball rolling for the Entourage sort of 'inside the biz' show, although it's radically different.

Would 'City of God' fit into this category? I hardly hear people talk about this film:

"Fur" a fantasy biopic about the photographer Diane Arbus.

Of recent films, "Ms. Pettigru Lives for a Day"
