  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Uncompressed 3K RAW

He is, but he is harmless...

Dieseljunkie went little overboard (calm down mate!), but he did have a point. I shoot now HDV, but whenever I can I go straight to HDD via HDMI (with full 1920x1080 and no HDV compression), or when forced to shoot to tape (like with aerial heli-mount) I then convert the footage to uncompressed TGA sequence and take it from there. The greatest thing about HDV is that it brought HD to indie level (especially HV20/30) and that can't be taken away from it.

I do however agree with Karapetkov that HDV codec sucks...

1 bit = 8 bytes (B).
1000 B = 1 kB
1,000,000 = 1 MB etc.
To alleviate confusion, there is a "new" standard for "binary" numbers (i.e., multiples of 1024, which is kiB, and MiB, and is pronounced "kibibyte" and "mebibyte".

Hard drive manufacturers use the correct notation, mostly because it gives them higher numbers, whereas Microsoft reports "MiB = MB" in Windows. I'm not sure where Apple and Linux stand on the issue, but it's about time it got fixed.

I think you mean 8bits = 1byte. You forgot the nibble too (4bits) :)

My post was not meant to insult anyone.

Anyway, it has been said many times before, the biggest complainers about the HDV format are the people who never worked with it. Of course I prefer a lossless format (or maybe even uncompressed) but there are trade-offs in that as well. HDV is a very efficient format and when you know its limitations, you can make HDV work very well for many purposes. The Red One/Scarlet has a CMOS sensor with rolling shutter. When you know that, you can do things to minimize the (bad) effect. That is and has always been what filmmaking is about... working around the limitations.

Everyone who says HDV is a bad format is talking nonsense. And many of us have earned a lot of money (still do) with the HDV format.
