Hi,

I'm trying to go through the vast array of lenses out there and find some nice ultra wides or possibly a decent zoom to compliment my scarlet. Trying to keep the rig light/mobile, lenses that travel well would be great. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Budget is under $5000

Thanks

Zeiss 15mm f2.8 in either EF or PL mount depending on what you're after.

Tokina 11-16 in either EF or PL mount depending on what you're after.

What he said.

There was also a used Ruby 12-24 going for 5k on reduser recently. Maybe it's stil avail?

Ultra wide ?
For Scarlet, the Sigma 8-16 rectilinear is a great lens. The 8mm makes the Tokina 11 look tele.
Especially useful on Scarlet if you want to shoot 2K high speed and still get a wide shot. Does not cover Epic 5K, so I don't use it much any more.

Yes, there is nothing wider than that Sigma 8-16. Les, how about 5kWS, does it cover it?
Two more good options are on the market, the Canon EF-S 10-22 (of which i read good things) and Sigma has two 10-20s, one with a fixed aperture of 3.5.

I wish Sigma would do a ultra-wide Art-lens.

There is also a Samyang/Walimex/Rokinon 14mm and Tokina has a 10-24, of which i know nothing.

If 15mm are wide enough i would go for the Zeiss, it's a bomb.

The Samyang 14mm has pretty bad distortion.

Does the Zeiss 15mm in canon mount have manual aperture or electronic and does it work on epic?

Should work on Epic fine. Tom Lowe posted frames from it last year even. If it's canon mount, those customarily have electronic aperture...but manual focus. Only way to get around this is to get the Nikon version, and have Duclos Leitax it to EOS mount.

So it would be a Nikon focused 15mm (ie wrong way), with manual aperture, and Canon Mount.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Nick, just heard for another Reduser that Canon mount works fine with the aperture etc. I'll stick with the straight Canon version

Sigma sold a 14mm f2.8 prime lens in several versions, for Nikon, Canon, Pentax. It has been discontinued. I understand that lenses of this style may be hybrid lenses comprising of glass and optical plastic elements. This link is to a review of the Sigma lens which I use. ------------ http://www.bythom.com/14lens.htm --------------- The front element is almost hemispherical and protrudes far from the retention ring. For initial setup and focus one removes the conventional front lens cap, then to shoot the image, a cylindrical "cap" or cover is also removed. Tis is best practice when using the lens as it is very easy to move too close to an object in foreground and crash against it when viewing through the finder or screen, I found this out the hard way and fetched up hard when setting up to shoot through guard rails on a deck. Fortunately they were old-school, made of water pipe and covered with thick accumulation of several layers of enamel paint so there was no scratch and no crack. As with other lenses of this type by popular brands, the image from this ultra wide-angle lens is "rectilinear" meaning no barrel distortion. Straight lines remain straight however there is distortion of diagonals as in stretch into the corners of the image. For still images outdoors this is not a big deal however with motion imaging in any dynamic moves the diagonal distortion becomes apparent. I was surprised to discover that on eBay there was only one sample listed, an automatic version for Pentax with no manual iris ring. When I previously checked about a year ago, there were many.
