Hi guys,
I know this discussion has been done on lot of other threads and forums but apart from PRICE,WEIGHT,PERSONAL PREFERENCE AND BRAND what is the major difference once can see in the footage shot on Ultra Prime lenses and Red Pro Prime lenses.
If someone can give some snap shots of the footage shot under same conditions and same camera same focal length of both the lenses it will really help.
Thanks
Harcharan

In one word.... NONE!!

I have done this more then once, and it is not easy at all for some one to spot a difference in Image quality form lens to lens, when we are talking about PRO CINE Lenses,
apart form one been faster or bigger or heavier, and or having more Focus Markings, Build is incredible on both lenses, but RED PRO PRIMES are IMO the absolute best lens for the
money and of this there is no question that I would take on even the most experienced DP's to come and proof me other wise.

To my BIG surprise we tested and found out they the 50mm RED PRO PRIME turned out to be SHARPER then my 50mm MASTER PRIME, which costs what? 5+ times more?

If a particle Job demands a smaller lens, then yes Ultra Primes it is, but if there is no such a need, then get yourself a Set of RED PRO PRIMES send it to Duclos, to have the Focus Markings added,
and never look back while saving 4 times equal to that amount of which you spent.

RPPs

RPPs

HI,
Thanks for your reply. I have read your earlie threads also We have 3 sets of RPPs' for our EPIC-M and Two RED MX cameras but still there is a bias towards Zeiss products from DP's and we are unable to convince them.
I think it just gives them pride and a 'kick' that they are shooting on UP's and MP's

We'll yes, I also have a set of Master Primes, and there is to be understood also why some major DP's do so, but other then the brand, and the fact that some added Focus markings on the Red Pro's, will make them better.

There is then no reason to really favor one vs the other, unless it is for a matter of size, and or speed.

Red Pro's are a very sharp and well built set of lenses!!

I find that more and more DP´s in Norway seems to appreciate the quality of the RPPs, our set has seen an increase in rentals.
The Red Pro Primes are amazingly good, they are a bit big/heavy, and the wider ones don´t flare so nicely - but apart from that they are excellent!

Ketch. Its great to hear people talking up the RPP as I think a lot of people under estimate them. Okay, they might be a bit heavy, but they have been designed to work with the RED ONE and the EPIC so working with 5K should be fine. Although saying that, does the full set of RPP cover the 5K sensor with our vignetting? I know the answer is "yes they do" but can anyone confirm? Ketch, do you know this from first hand experience?

:-)

I think the best way to convince DP's to use RPP is to use them and show them the results. Believe in the image that you create and let that do the talking...

If Red creates a new lighter set of RPPs then they would have a clear winner I think...

Thanks Ketch for the info. I have to send an 18-50mm RED zoom to get repaired... will enquire on the pricing for the focus markings.

Find out how much your lens is for repair. We're going to put ours on sale real soon.... in case it's cheaper for you to buy a used one... ;)

Steve,

the RPP's are indeed fantastic lenses, and the only reason I use Master Primes is do to the *T1.3 speed for the needs I have in all 3 projects in preproduction,
and yes I confirm that all RPP's form 18mm to 100mm do fully cover 5k with no vignetting.

My pleasure Andrae, Duclos did a great job on my lenses and it will do a great job on yours... ;)

I second that. The biggest problem is size and weight. Hope they make red electronic lenses with also full manual control and the size and weight of an ultra prime, that would be absolute killer lenses :)

Thanks for that Ketch. Your worth your weight in gold, (which is quite a good price right now!!!)

I knew they would be, with the slight vignette on the 18mm that Andrae pointed out but thats fine.

I know you love your Master Primes, and I would love a set... one day. But for the price, and the quality, the RPP are a total steal. I guess even at T1.8 they are fast, even if not as fast as the MP. But I guess getting them will take some time :-)

Given that RED is on a role, I am certain that they are reworking the RPP's - its only a matter of time...
