Hello

I ask you for your experience with the RED Ultra-Brite LCD.
I have to choose between the RED Ultra-Brite and the smallHD 7 Cine RED.
Can you help me please?

Jochen

Haven't had the chance to get my hands on the SmallHD 7 Cine, but I'm a fan of the RED Ultra-Brite. I've traveled, got rained on, and put it through some less than ideal situations and it never gave me any issues. It may not be the best in terms of color, but it does a good job for the fast pace shoots I've worked on.

Not to mention it's either one cable or a direct mount to the camera depending on the version you go with. Helps keep the camera nice and tidy. A bit harder to do with SmallHD 7 Cine.

Are you debating between the two because you're building out a camera kit, upgrade, etc.? I'm asking because it'd probably be a good idea to at least have a the small RED monitor for any issues you run into with the SmallHD. Having first party accessories would be one way to troubleshoot any issues you may have with the SmallHD.

Another consideration is if you'd use any other camera system in the future, that would be the big advantage of using the SmallHD across multiple camera systems.

Thank you for your answers.
Does anyone have a comparison because of the brightness and focusing?
How about the reflection on both?
The 7" Touch reflects very strongly.

The cine 7 is a deadly monitor but the cables kind of suck. I do a lot of handheld doc work and the ctrl cable has been in for repair twice. No visible damage but a bit of pressure on the cable bends something inside. The monitor spent a couple weeks in the Peruvian summer heat and never missed a beat. If you have the $, I'd go with the Red option, just because you don't need to deal with cables.

Cine7 has much better color accuracy and if you opt for the TX version like I did it’s more cables but it’s less things on the cam. My 7 inch touch broke multiple times until I finally had enough and sold it for parts. Only thing I miss is the cable less design but I love the better picture and wireless transmitter.

i have just got the cine 7 with controls. Coming from a red monitor the control is a bit buggy, the overlay from the hdsdi with all the red data does not line up with the small hd control which is a pain, scrolling back and forth between pages is a pain also, and in critical moments where you accidently touch the screen or some seat drops on it the menu expands obscuring the frame, causing painic, which I am have enough of already around me.

My thoughts are : if you are on a dolly, or with a big crew it will not be a problem, if you are on the run and using it as a primary interface it does not inspire confidence. A side handle or sidekick would be necessary I think. When ever I use it I feel I need a back up just in case. Also when you thurn it on you have to connect it to the camera which can take a few goes, not ideal when people are waiting on you. Also it does not give full access to the entire menu, i had to use foolcontrol to change some buttons paths, foolcontrol felt more user friendly.

I have no fault with the monitor as a monitor, especially with the tx built in.

A great monitor, controls work but I would recommend a backup interface.

Best

Invest to Red Equipment.
Invest to Red Cinema Co.
This is the best way because RED is an inventor and spends our money on our future equipment that we will use tomorrow. :001_tt1:

SmallHD is part of the Vitec capitalist group.
Only :ihih:

I haven't tried the SmallHD as on-camera monitor but do have a 702 super-bright for my camera assistant.

I also got the new super-bright Red Touch monitor a few months ago (to replace the original one), and i absolutely love it. Been using it outside in bright sunlight on the Movi and was still able to view the image, which wasn't the case with the old one. This might also be the case with the Small-HD, but I really love the simplicity of the Red touch compared to other solutions. Just 1 cable, no additional batteries, all menus available directly from the touch screen. It's pretty expensive but totally worth it in my opinion.
I really hope Red keeps that option on future DSMC3 bodies.

Many thanks to all.
Yesterday I have ordered the Ultra-Brite from RED.
