  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

UAVs for Raven

really! do you have pics? What lenses?
Looking at getting a set of Zeiss ZF's to keep the weight down.

I don't have any pictures at the moment but it can be arranged. I've been using leica r's. Sometimes i'll use Rokinon's if needed.

I use two different power methods, either D-tap out of a V-mount or a Lipo to the bottom of the cradle below the camera base. Depending on the weight of the lens.

Every day I would go with the Alta for a RED.

Weight difference between RED Raven and RED EPIC is not that big.

S900, S1000 etc. are to unsafe/unreliable for valuable cameras and a lot of professional sets.

They have to many vibrations which causes things to go wrong.

better a good home built there is plenty of good frames out there...

Statistically a copter shouldn't crash that often. We have logged a few hundred hours on our big copter, never crashed.

Here in Australia you have to do a lot of maintenance, checklists etc. (like a Charter Airline)
and insurances cost 5% of the cost of the copter a year. So in theory you should only crash every 20+ years

Would love an Alta but for now we'll keep flying our Aeronavics Skyjib which is a great copter as well :)

main reason we are buying a raven is for UAV work, Alta is were we are investing our money, I'm done done with DJI, worse customer support in the world.
From what I've heard is the Alta is still VERY beta. This is obviously just word of mouth, but those who i've spoken to with experiences with the ALTA so far have had nothing but problems and are even having to send them back in for some kind of wiring issue.

We've flown an S1000 for well over 400 hours. It's about Maintenance brother. We torque all bolts after every job, swap blades after 50 hours etc.

And to Luke's note, the Raven is too heavy for the S1000. A lot of guys are trying to put the M5 or Ronin M under it with red or even gh4, and with relative altitude / air density it's a crash eating to happen. Many a friend has crashed attempting this.
we've destroyed more then one Scarlet on a UAV. When it comes to camera and lens choice for a UAV you really need to assume it will be destroyed within 15 hours of operation and plan/charge accordingly. The longest time a DJI S1000 can fly commercially is 70 hours and we've never had one make it that long before they go haywire.

The Canon pancake 40mm is a nice super lightweight choice for a UAV and painless when it's in pieces on the ground.

What would you suggest to fly a Raven around?
