On set right now and two RED cameras failed. One wouldn't boot once we connected ac power, the other wouldn't boot after it accidentally lost power. We let them both sit for a few hours, and then they worked. But as soon as we had to power down to change battery, they failed again. Now we are stuck with two un-bootable REDS and a bunch of cast and crew sitting around. Any suggestions?

Change ALL, power plates, batteries, cables. Remove all connected stuff. Try just booting a clean body with nothing attached.

If that don't work. Re-flash firmware.
(copy "upgrade" folder to a flash card and boot)

If you are using the same battery plate for both cameras than its most likely a bad battery plate. Are you trying to run power through the RED battery charger? if so, make sure you don't have any batteries plugged in and even then that doesn't always work especially if you have a bum cable or connection. Try different batteries with different battery plates etc.

Why not start with contacting RED? Brent@red.com

Where did you get the cameras from? Did they offer any support?

I'm not quite sure why people that have problems, that might be solved quickly, post here instead of contacting us directly 1st. We have 7 day a week service and have dealt with every issue possible.

Just shoot me an email to the address Jim posted above and me or one of the tech support guys will get back to you.

A couple weeks ago I ran into the same problem on a show I was a DIT on. They had rented these beat up Red's that had all kinds of problems. They would do exactly the same thing. Suddenly turn off and not boot up. So what I did was unplug the drive and battery plate from both cameras and had them run on my 16GB CF Cards. We ran the cameras off the DC units and they ran fine after that.

So it could be a couple things, either a bad battery or battery plate. A bad drive cable will also do this. People need to realize that these cameras need to be treated like a computer more than a film camera. So the idea is to not completely thrash the cameras. But if your just letting your camera package go out whomever then I guess there's not much you can do.

Jim - thanks - I was directing the shoot, and really didn't know about that support channel. My DP/Red owner didn't mention contacting you guys directly, so I just jumped on my laptop to get help. I will contact you guys first next time (hopefully there is no next time). Fortunately, we just had to wait a few hours and one of the camera's booted and we were able to finish the shoot.

I will get the Red owner to post in detail of what happened exactly and how we were able to get the camera's functioning again.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
