I just noticed the TVLogic LCD http://www.tvlogicusa.com/product/vfm056.php in another thread.

The features look very cool, but I have a few concerns?

1. can the Scarlet operate with just this and a side handle? I saw a post where a Scarlet user had one of these and side handle (while waiting on his 5.6 touch), but couldn't get the Scarlet to operate with it.

2. Does this connect the same as the 5.6" touch? Or - does it take up an hdmi or SDI output? I want to monitor without menus using hdmi thru a large LCD, so this might cause a conflict if the TVLogic uses the same hdmi port - and hdmi/SDI at the same time is not supported.

3. Does it take power from the Scarlet in the same fashion as the 5.6"? How would it be powered?

4. Will it mount as it is? I've got the Canon Mount package ordered, but nothing else.

5. Something about touching the same screen I'll be using for viewing (if I kept the 5.6" touch) seems troubling? But, I've never used a touch screen. Is this a concern?

6. While recording outside, if I used the 5.6" touch, would I be able to use some kind of hood also (and still use it as a touch screen)? Or, do I only get the benefits of touch if recording in non-glaring light?

Thanks!

I'll answer what I think I can…

1. Yes, I believe so. Though controlling the camera with the Touchscreen really is nice.

2. SDI or HDMI.

3. No, you would have to provide power to the monitor separately.

1. This link makes me question whether the Scarlet can be set into the mode so that it will work?

2. With the 5.6" touchscreen, I can display menus there, but can have an external hdmi connected WITHOUT menus, right? If I wanted to use an external hdmi monitor along with the TVLogic, I'd have to have menus on the hdmi (so they would appear on the TVLogic), as I can only choose either hdmi or SDI? Am I correct about this?

Thanks!

Go with the Small HD DP6 then. Someone on another thread made the comment I dont like that the sdi's are on the top. Well the panel has a flip function for picture and menu so you can flip it around. They have also custom scales built into the DP6 to allow you to either see the menu or not. DP6 also comes with a hood and screen protector. It has hdmi and sdi inputs with passthrough meaning you can plug camera into the monitor and also go from monitor to field monitor for viewing. It must be powered by either canon batteries or their own battery system. Its a great monitor and a great price.

And it uses the same panel as the tvlogic.

That monitor looks very nice! I like the feature where they are field upgradable!! I don't think you can do that with the TVLogic.

I'd still have the problem of menus showing on the external.

I currently (with my 'toy' camera my Scarlet will replace) record tethered to HDMI, and would continue to do that so I can quickly watch a short session to make sure everything went well - so I need to get rid of the menus (nice to have a 'backup' in case all-else-failed also).

Maybe I could set a programmable key on the side handle to do that?

Pretty sure the Scarlet has an output option to not show menu's on its hdmi or sdi outputs like the Red One has. If not you can use the monitors scaling function.

The DP6 is fantastic. I have two of them, and their previous 9" DP1... all excellent monitors. SmallHD regularly pushes out upgrades for the DP6, constantly adding features. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

There is a menu option for clean feed or with graphics.
You don't need the Red touch screen to control Epic or Scarlet. Side handle or Redmote both control everything.
The 5" Red Touch Screen though is twice as fast to use settings, and well worth the $$

Some notes about the TVLogic vs the 5" Touchscreen. I just finished a shoot a few weeks ago where I had both on the camera. You can control everything with the redmote or the side handle just like with the touchscreen. The TS is faster, but you also get greasy finger prints on your monitor...which is glossy...which shows finger prints very well. That said, here are the advantages and things you can do with the TV Logic.

1. It's bigger and sharper. The 5" LCD is not very sharp when the menus are up on it. However, you can set a user key to hide and show the menus. So with both monitors you can turn the menus on and off quickly. For the 5" LCD this helps greatly with focus, but the TVLogic is still much better.
2. It's not glossy. Much better for outdoors!
3. It can work on other cameras.
4. It's cheaper and if a cable goes bad, it's a few dollar BNC instead of a $200 lemo cable.

I read a thread where someone bought an iPad plastic stylus to use for the touchscreen. I wonder how workable that would be?

So the focusing an viewing is better on the i guess either the TVLogic or the DP6.

Both of them have features the touchscreen doesn't have.

But, the touchscreen has just one cable (an expensive one) and is very fast to use.

I'm still a bit unclear on dealing with the menus.

I was aware that Scarlet had the ability to disable menus, but ... if both the TVLogic/DP6 and the external monitor share the same hdmi or SDI (it has to been one way or the other, you can't run both simultaneously), then it has to be easy to disable the menus - and then re-enable them (using the side handle to re-enable, as you'd no longer have menus on the TVLogic/DP6).

I'm also a bit concerned about that one user who had a side handle but couldn't get hdmi to work as it was disabled (apparently needed a touchscreen to enable it?). I'd be using an external hdmi monitor.

Difficult decision. Thanks for all the feedback!

I've got a couple of styli for my iPad. So Friday I tried them on Luis Caffese's Scarlet (named "Chewy," I believe). All I can say is…

Get one. Stylus plus RED Touch rocks. I recommend the BoxWave stylus, which I think you can pick up at Best Buy. Good stuff.

Amazon carries them too. I don't know about you, but my experience with Best Buy has been that they are not always, in fact, the best buy... if you get my drift. :)

Anyway, BoxWave looks pretty nice! And it comes in RED! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ETU94...iveASIN=B000ETU944&adid=05H7RN5VBRQAN31FRMYX&

More likely on a build that doesn't have HDMI enabled yet. I don't know about Scarlet builds vs Epic, but I don't believe there is an Epic release build yet that supports HDMI, only beta builds.
