  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

TVC shot on ANAMORPHIC LENSES and some with Elites

Looks misgraded with several overexposed and very washed out looking shots. ?

Where were all you guys when I was on here a while ago screaming about anamorphics? Whatever happened to the guys telling me that the disadvantages out weighed the advantages because of resolution, as if resolution was ever the reason that these lenses looked great?

Amazing footage btw! Anamorphics are straight up beautiful, not because they're sharp, but because they have a mood and smoothness and emotion which is impossible to get with normal 35 glass. Not that they don't have their own look and feel, I just prefer the anamorphic look.

Also, does anyone know how well the 2:1 support is working as of now? Does it capture sound and if so does it work well in post or is it another "16:9 has no love for sound" thing?

William,

There has been numerous threads about anamorphic lenses and there are many users who praise them.

I think that most of the people who condemn them actually don't really know what they're about. Now I'm not saying all of you but probably a lot of the ones saying their not good enough because you loose resolution has probably never used them.

In saying so it's a matter of choice and as JJ said before.... RED please make a full sensor ana crop, pretty please. Or even better.... The Epic... make that a non 16:9 sensor, so we can really be Epic with anamorphic lenses (we need to kill the new D21, which is very often displayed with Hawks).

Ohh by the way Tony. The "washed" out look is lens flares and is intentionally but the image you're displaying is way more "washed" out than our original. As for Miha I'm sorry you don't like it but it's definitely not misgraded, it's a matter of preference.

Weird Crew,

That's what I meant really. I had a thread about Ana's and some people shot it down because of the lost resolution. I was just trying to point out that resolution is not the only thing when it comes to creating beautiful images. It might even be not all that important to be crispy super sharp (to an extent, soft focus is still soft focus, and still looks like dog doo doo...).

My feeling, is even with the resolution loss on either side, you're still dealing in enough resolution to easily hold up in a 1920X1080 HD world. Beyond that, the softness and odd distortions (which I like from those lenses) will help to smooth out any stair stepping or other pixelation that might occur, IMO.

Don't know what they did. But transvideo has the HD6 which is a "small" LCD with hd-sdi input and 2:1 squeeze.

Does anyone know what is supported with the Anamorphic 2:1 mode? Does it hold onto sound like a 4k 2:1 (aspect) clip? Does it work with the new FCP Log and Transfer Window?

I know the 16:9 support is still more or less has its bugs, but what about Anamorphic support?

Question to WierdCrew - what did you guys do about viewing the anamorphic stuff on the cam? Just put up with the squeeze?

Thanks

J.

We down converted with an AJA and then used a video converter for the ana squeeze. Worked well but the image was back on bad PAL.

As far as I gather is that it's only a setting showing you guidelines were the ana crop should be. It doesn't actually crop, there is some meta data that seem to tell REDcine etc what it's suppose to be, so it does a default setting when loaded. We shot on 16:9 4K mostly because it was a little buggy and it was just easier to set up a few settings ourselves and go by that instead. We marked the monitors with were the crop would be.

This is just lovely, graded beautifully. I love high darks like this. The flare shapes are a work of art. Even love the touch of softness too.

Thank you Matthew very kind of you. Saw you're work loved it. I might be in Toronto by next month for a TVC so maybe we can figure out if we can do something together?

Is that higher-res version still coming?

It will come just haven't been back in Denmark. I'm in London at the moment and are going to Norway tomorrow but should be there on sunday.

Fred,

The car crash spot always makes me cry its beautiful when you get a second chance from a close call by the skin of your teeth...Superb!

As far as advice I would get in touch with that particular Director and make a proposal in a friendly way it tells of admiration and also legally you have leverage so play your cards right and take it to the next level. Could just be the begining of a beautiful relationship between the two of you...Hälften vunnit friskt vågat...Wasnt that what you said?

Cheers,

DogDay

Thanks Wierdcrew - Does anyone in Red have any information about new builds making some kind of viewfinder squeeze possible so that Anamorphics are workable in the Vf or monitor? thanks.

I can tell you're just about to get your own anamorphics

Due in a couple of days :)

Would be amazing if Red tech could look at a viewfinder squeeze display option (hopefully it's possible)

Alternatively I have an aja - does this have some option or does anyone recommend anything?

FYI pushed some footage through a hi def telecine this morning - looked incredible I thought.

I second that notion. It's going to be annoying to have to shoot squeezed. Not impossible, just slightly annoying.

Maybe I'll get a cheap sd monitor that does an unsqueeze just for frame reference and such..

Beautiful spot. Looks really great. Not anything you could control, but did anyone else notice the skew at 10/11 secs in? It's not crazy bad, of course worse frame by frame. But even at regular speed playback it's just enough for something to not feel right to me. Again, not a criticism. And I don't mean to be the boy who cried skew on this forum. It's just something that I was always worried about and now that I have my camera I'm realizing that I have to be much more careful about it than even I would have thought.
