  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

TSA camera damage - WARNING!

As someone who normally FedEx's my gear to avoid all of this huge problem, I am now facing a situation where I need to carry-on my RED camera on a flight.
I was going to cargo ship the bulk of the gear and hand carry the body in a small soft case.
Since I haven;t carried on anything in a decade, I need to ask you all for advice. Do I need to carry-on a battery to fire-up the camera?
Do I also need to carry an LCD viewfinder to confirm that the camera actually works and is not a WMD?
Do not?
Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm a member of the carry-on only club... ...Everything was wrapped in towels to make it all fit & snug and weighed in at 60lbs.

Great. Only 2 to 5 times heavier than any airline's carry on limit. I feel safe. I suppose you would also sue them if an overhead bin gave way and crashed down on your head?

...That's why when I sit down in my seat and there is somebody's bag in my overhead spot I loudly ask as I'm pulling out the bag "who's bag is this?" then I set it in the isle as I put my bag in my spot!

Wow. You have your own overhead spot? Impressive. I think I have flown with you before. :-)

You need to carry on all of your batteries. Do a search on RedUser for details.

ive transported just the camera.. no battery, no problem.
they never asked to fire it up..they never ask me to fire up my macbook...
they just swab and let me go.

If security were truly the issue, the TSA inspector positions would pay $125K per year. I suspect it's more like a feel-good pill so people like my 82-year-old mother-in-law will get on an airplane after 9/11.

I too have recently decided to carry body & key len(s)... I rarely carry but I have recently been experiencing minor damage mainly because of TSA cutting/breaking off locks and not repacking properly.

So, no batts or accessories just the Body only!!! I just returned from Miami>Paris>...Paris>Miami>Bonaire last night. No issues. But you never know with the red since it does look so nuclear!!!!

You need to carry your batteries with you if they're Lithium batteries. As for RED batteries I believe you're only allowed 2 of them per person.

As for Nimh batteries such as Anton Bauers Hytron's your allowed to check them in.

I've never had any problems with security asking me to fire the RED up though. It's quite clear that it's a camera on closer inspection.

My suggestion.

My suggestion.

When air travelling with my Red I have been well served by keeping a Pelican 1510 with cut out foam insert and the following contents:
Red Body
ET/Arri Baseplate
Top Mounts
Small Top Rods

all built together.
And in a small compartment next to it:
RED EVF

There is very little there to mess with and you can keep it as a carry-on item. On most shoots we also pack lenses as a seperate carry-on.

My two cents.

Read up on it. 9/11 was a staged attack, not a terrorist attack. Read. Learn. Be informed.

Fear controls large masses of people better then anything else.

Everything said so far makes total sence until the plane you or your loved one is on explodes ... The ultimate inconvenience!

Same here - but I haven't encountered any problems at LAX (main airport I frequent). In fact, TSA has always been courteous and respectful. They usually invite me to watch what they do. Just my experience...

TSA stories

TSA stories

I will also say that of course some TSA people "get it" and are in fact very nice (and even smart!) and it's unfair to generalize, if fun.
Here is one of those "your luggage has been inspected" notes that a screener wrote on. It was in my Cooke 20-100 case (lens now gone; see my "more stolen gear" post) Obviously he had some idea of the value.
Pretty funny. I tacked it up on my corkboard...
Cheers,
Harry

Unbelievable!

This is a very interesting article that supports everybody's feelings here.

We're actually making custom foam liners now for small pelicans now so you can carry on your red, a battery, cards, batt mount, LCD, short rods and tools, all in one small case that fits overhead. We already carry on our EVF and lenses in small pelicans. I'll post pics of our flying case soon and we might even put it into Monstercine production for the frequent flyers.

Can't check batteries?

We travel with 4 bricks and chargers in a Pelican case that we've checked many times and never had a problem, so once again the TSA's level of consistent inconsistency prevails... They remove our sensor cap to inspect for WMDs, but fail to keep us from carrying on a case of potentially explosive batteries? Scary for all!

Post cold war...

No issues. But you never know with the red since it does look so nuclear!!!!

It's a good thing the cold war is over because having the word "RED" on a 1950's electronic device would have surely drawn great suspicion and spurned international intrigue.:nuke:

I've checked my two Red power systems (with 4 bricks attached to chargers in the same case) over a dozen times now. I've never had so much as a dirty look. TSA rules state that if it's on a device you can check as many as you want.
