  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Trying to understand this question.

I contacted a friend who directs music video, and informed him that I will have a RED package for rent. He in turn said great, but then asked this question, "How are you addressing the DIT issues for FCP"

What are the issues he is referring to?

Thanks

Von

Not 100 percent sure, but wasn't there a conflict with the DGC over "editorial" software being used on set? I heard that the camera unions won jurisdiction of the "data wranglers" but the editors wanted a stipulation that they would not use editorial software.

Sorry to be so sketchy - but I honestly don't know the hard facts - just what I have heard from other people.

It is more related to the DMT or someone specifically dedicated to managing and backing up data on set.

This is a new position that has just recently been created.

The story I heard is that the DGC wanted that position to fall under their jurisdiction. The camera unions argued (rightly so) that it should fall under the camera department - not the DGC.

As a result - the data management position falls under the camera unions jurisdiction, but the DGC stipulated that no editorial software could be used - to protect their editors - 'cause you know - data managers are really wannabee ediotrs ;-)

Again - hearsay - someone with the facts needs to join in this conversation.

It's not so much that the data wranglers want to be editors, but if they know the FCP/Red post workflow, and have the software, then it's pretty easy to transcode, sync sound to picture, and create scene bins for the editor - in other words, be assistant editors. I think asst editors are going to have to start being data wranglers, or vice versa.

Get over it

Get over it

I don't want to go union bashing but WTF? Having a data manager doing assistant editor tasks makes a lot of sense. This is the brave new digital world where opportunities for greater efficiency should be embraced.

I have been on a number of shoots in the last year and half where the post house has a person(s) on set. Typically its when VFX issues are of concern. I advocate a new paradigm that recommends post have someone on set or that the DIT/DMT/DAS be given instructions for prepping the media for the editor. Or maybe I am the only guy who works on projects with deadlines...

Then again, when was the last time unions promoted efficiency? This is all about man hours and pension/health contributions...so sad.
