Hello all,

I'm looking for as much info about 3d shooting, history, creative usage etc. as I possibly can for a thorough essay about this subject for school.
Searching around the web I get the feeling that the subject is still pretty new as my search turned up only a couple of books.
So if you guys know any other resource, whitepapers, something on the subject it will be much appreciated.

thanks,
Mike

The book "3d movie making" is awesome! Its blue and Green written by Bernard Mendiburu

The Santa Fe 3d workshop (with Geoff Boyle?) is awesome!

And if you are luck enough, the Sony Studios DP training is also fantastic. But this may be over.

Prost,
Rich

Thank you for the plug!

There are regular Santa Fe 3D workshops, Gothenburg Sweden is the next on in a week or so's time, followed by Chicago, LA and Toronto in the next month or so with Vancouver, Detroit & Montreal to follow with Amsterdam in September hopefully.

As for books, well there's my nes eBook:-

I highly recommend both Reducation and Santa Fe Workshops, especially at Red Studios. =)

I second Rich's recommendation of 3D Movie Making: Stereoscopic Digital Cinema from Script to Screen by Bernard Mendiburu, and also add the free Foundations of the Stereoscopic Cinema by Lenny Lipton as a great overview of the history and underlying principles. Download it here:

Just be careful not to buy anything of those old books, as they are absolutely useless ;)

Today's 3D is a completely new realm of Image capturing system, that has come way to far form those times, and has very little in
common, most of the math is assisted by Computers and incredible systems such as the ET Atom rig, and 3Ality TS-5 with the SIP 2100.

I have gone thru all of those books 10 years ago, when every one was taking me for a fool to want to try and revive 3D,
they were right.. then, not any more off course, but we need new Books.

3D Movie Making was the only one I found a bit interesting Read, but also dispersive at best, yet a must read for any one with no Clew of 3D.

Can't say on Jeoff's book since I have not read it, and unfortunately a One page preview, is not in off of a preview for an eBook,
at list not IMO, still better read for sure then any of those hold books, hope you can take an honest and respectful opinion on it ;)

I'm happy for any reviews, good or bad, I'll look at the bad ones and do what I can to improve, it's an ebook so this can be done as fast as Apple OK it, 4-6 weeks at the moment.

There is a jpg preview of 3 pages which I've attached.

Think of your eyes. Now replace each eye with an identical camera. If your eyes can't do it, you shouldn't do it with the cameras. Some cameras are small enough to fit side by side just as your eyes are (65mm on average). Other cameras are too large to fit side by side the same distance apart as your eyes- in these instances you use a prism rig like the Atom. Crossing your eyes is convergence - they're either parallel to see far away or slightly crossed to focus on closer subjects. The rest is a function of operating the cameras as you would in a single-camera environment only in as perfect a sync as you can get them.

It's a whole lot more complicated than that, Jeff. There are plenty of instances where you would want a side-by-side rig with an inter-axial distance of far more than 65mm, and instances where you would want less. Likewise, there are many instances where you would not want to use convergence at all.

Definitely not meant as a Bad review Jeoff,, since I have not read it, just a suggestion on giving people few pages of Preview to read on...

I applaud any one that Writes and publishes anything. ;)

I'll be a bit immodest and plug my own resource http://www.realvision.ae/blog.

more specifically :http://realvision.ae/blog/category/stereoscopic-3d/
It's about time I openly stated that it's visited by both cinematographers and moviemakers alike (yes even the established ones), who have learnt a bit from the pages therein (and changed previously held notions on 3D) , but of course will not give credit where due.

The resource is free...for now.

Regards
Clyde
