Caution. No direct spoilers in here but don't hang me anyone.

Haven't seen an actual thread on this yet so if there is one please do shut this down.

I only managed to watch half of it, was in the cinema anyway to run a course but saw a good hour or so. So I will leave full judgement till I have seen it fully.

First thoughts...I think the negative press doesn't justify it. I don't think the story is anywhere near as bad as people are saying. Sure it is a relatively simple story and that is not a bad thing. It is a sequel that is following on a story. From what I saw, I bought the story. It wasn't riddled with holes and was far superior to any Paul WS Anderson episodes. I will have to wait to see how the story pans out. I liked the story. I wasn't blown away by originality, however it was decent enough. It didn't go very far on the games element that the first one did. In fact that was pretty much over before it even got started. That is not the story they chose to tell. For such a big world they really tell a small story and do not really involve many other characters like the first one did.

Acting seemed fine. I don't think it was overly expositional - no more than most sci-fi films.

Effects are impeccable, although Digital Bridges' facial animation was still off but that that may be due to the fact that Bridges is not really that animated a talker anyway and we know its digital (uncanny valley). From people who have seen it who have nothing to do with the industry were impressed. I wasn't. It was passable though.

3D was fairly restrained really but it looks good in IMAX overall. I think the world is really nicely planned out.

Well see it again in full and then fully make my mind up about it. But thats my firstl thoughts. I am a Tron fan anyway so its not that hard to please me. Having said that from all the bad press. From the offset of the movie I was there.

I love the original. I thought the soundtrack for the new one is superb. Looking forwards to seeing it.

Story was meh, but that was expected. Visuals were mind blowing, as was the soundtrack.

I really enjoyed this film a lot, it was absolutely great to watch, especially in IMAX 3D

I just got back from seeing it at the El Capitan in Hollywood with my wife.

THE STORY ROCKED. THE VISUALS ROCKED. THE SOUNDTRACK ROCKED.

FLYNN LIVES, MAN!!!!!! TRRRRROOOOONNNNNNN!!!!!!!!

I do want to point out that my opinion might be somewhat skewed:

1) My wife had to physically restrain me from pumping my arms several times during the movie.

2) I now have a picture of myself making a victory sign in front of the life-size Lightcycle that was in the lobby.

3) I cheered for every VFX house when the credits came up.

4) I couldn't stop saying, "FRIGGIN TRON, MAN" for the 10 minutes leading up to the movie.

5) I booed at the previews because they were not the movie.

The El Capitan put on a laser light show with smoke and huge sound before the movie came up. It was an absolute total geek-fest. The 7th grader in me was in full spazz-out-and-rejoice mode.

all i gatta say is..... i understand:-D

Is Tron even in the new movie?

Graeme

Well, he's in the credits, so....

It was great. My only two complaints are...
1) ...that TRON had such a small role and...
2) ...that the ending was played up to but wasn't that impressive in the end.

But I must admit, I thoroughly enjoyed it - and the story held up well without blowing my mind. The only shot that I cringed at was...
[SPOILERS!!!!]

...when Kevin Flynn "absorbed" Clu. The facial animation really didn't hold up and it took me out of the movie completely (and no, I thought the visuals held up until that moment).

[END OF SPOILERS]

Other than that, the movie was lovely and TRON lives on!:sifone:

Holly crap this movie is awesome!!!

Rant: This is what Avatar wasn't- completely engaging fiction with excellent production design and music. I SO wanted to love Avatar's design, but it seemed so lazy, so obvious, so Aliens meets Halo, like students doing a James Cameron tribute. Really cool for them, but nothing new. I just wanna say to myself "damn, that's cool." I said that a few times in this movie. Like, "this is what movies should do" sort of cool.

Again, music. Geez, Daft Punk did an awesome gig here. I'm the guy who bought the Titanic soundtrack. I pumped the pop tune and might have shed a tear. But I forgot Avatar's theme as the credits rolled. Tron Legacy- I'm streaming it on Rhapsody on the way home, driving WAY too fast to Target to get cat food, LED Xmas lights and crisps.

Not that Avatar wasn't great for all the established reasons, but I argue Tron Legacy left me feeling more satisfied.

Yumy!!!

Visuals and music, awesome, especially at the IMAX.
Story, not so much.

This will top out at no more than a quarter of Avatar's global box office, specifically because the story is not something a lot of people will relate to.
We're tech geeks here, so we're more likely to get it, and even so, for me this had too much "magic" in it for a sic-fi film and despite loving the original found myself rather disinterested. But that's just me.

On another note... For anyone who ever suggested Avatar looked like a video game: this is what a movie really looks like when it looks like a video game. Btw that still doesn't mean either of those two films didn't look awesome. And frankly, I'm sick of the relentless "suck it Avatar" attitude I see from some people. Not everything is a competition, and we have to be able to boast about what we like without doing it at the expense of something else. I prefer Coke over Pepsi but that doesn't mean Pepsi sucks.

Not to be part of the "suck it Avatar" crowd- it was a GREAT film. I'm also happy to say out loud that I love Titanic. I sounded a bit harsh regarding the production design- sorry about that. But Cameron himself designed the Dropship in Aliens. That was like all-time awesome! I just wish that Avatar was up to that same level... just felt like I had seen it all before. Story as well. End of Avatar comparison.

For some reason Tron just sucked me in more than a movie has in a while. Maybe not since "The Social Network" or Tom Ford's "A Single Man" where afterwords I was like 'damn, THAT was a great film!' Tron's not going to be up for best picture, but it was a hell of a lot of fun!

Yeah it was fun, but I probably won't see it again, except maybe to try another theater for a different experience. It won't be because of the story, unfortunately.
The Social Network I've seen 5 times already and could see again - and in that case it IS because of the story (the gorgeous MX footage certainly doesn't hurt).

Sorry if I came off too strong, I'm just one of the guys who saw Avatar 7 times for exactly the reasons you said you didn't like :-)

I agree that the Avatar vs. anything that looks cool/could make a lot of money, comparison is a little annoying at times but lets face it Avatar is like Red in some ways, there are many that obsessively love it and others that love to hate it just because there are so many fans.

Also, I have been a little annoyed that there has been so much criticism of the Tron story (that it is weak) yet Avatar seemed to escape much of that criticism from the mainstream press. A little bit of a double standard? I think everyone got caught up in the Avatar explosion and I will admit that I was in love the first time I saw it but it did not hold up in subsequent viewings.

Lets face it, films these days (at least those with big budgets) are visually driven, not story driven. Inception was a great story with great visuals but it was a rare treat.

I have high hopes for Tron. We need to remember that it is a Disney movie from a first time director based on a (let's be honest) not so stellar 80's movie. Story will be average at best but if the visuals keep the audience in their seats than mission accomplished.

Thor and Andrew- great thoughts all around! I love REDUSER!

Good point regarding story with Avatar Andrew. Thor, for whatever reason I wasn't turned on by the premis of Avatar so it was an uphill battle for me. Sounds like we're on two sides of the same coin! Tron is silly, for sure. But it's got Daft Punk in it!

Cheers!

Daft Punk did an amazing job at the score.

As much as I love the original the best thing about the sequel were the end credits were the Disney logo. :ihih:

Otherwise, it was pretty much an average movie.

Actually, my major problem is that they shot this movie like they were shooting it for 2D, not 3D, which clearly showed in the final product. The 3D is merely an afterthought.

3D has to move beyond the gimmicks, but it also has to move beyond people treating it like 2D...

edit: and i dont mean to say they shot it 2d then converted it. My point was that they seemed to approach it with a 2D mindset in terms of mise en scene etc

You could take this argument to its logical extreme and say that there because of this there are NO bad movies in the world. However this whole line of logic is entirely defeated when you bring "Showgirls" into the equation...

So yes, sometimes movies do suck. Badly :)

Vertical streaks?

Vertical streaks?

What was with the vertical streaks, like the ones that CCD sensors make, were they added in post OVER 35mm film footage to make it look "Digital"?

It's the only time I have seen very bad tone banding on more than one shot in a feature film, what DI system did they use and why are there heavy tone bands in some shots?

I saw it in 3D digital at the Castro last night, but these are probably in the footage since they are not showing all the time, just in some shots...?
