We will be looking for a new head for our Red1, with Red Primes and RedZoom18-85, Redrock Micro mattebox, Red LCD and HD. I hope to hear any great/terrible experiences with support gear to help us make a choice. We usually shoot with VERY small crews, so light weight is a factor.

many thanks!

One great option is a refurbished O'Connor 50 with the Visual Products pan handle upgrade. My 50 has some kind of Jr plate mount which allows for a Manafrotto 100mm ball mount to be screwed on which opens up a lot of options for legs. Not sure how the 50 would fare with a lens as big as a 18-85 though. I would think it would be OK if you move the battery to a tripod apron via a battery belt clip (my favorite way to manage the battery).

With my Red One cameras I used a Miller Arrow 55 head, with Miller Sprinter II 2-stage carbon fiber legs. Excellent head action, total tripod weight is just 13.8 pounds, head supports up to 55 pounds, has a 100mm bowl, and the head/tripod combo is one of the very best performance to price ratio combos available.

With my Epic cameras now I use two different heads: Miller Arrow 55 for heavy loads (above 31 pounds), and a Miller Compass 25 (loads up to 31 pounds. Both heads have 100mm bowls, and depending on the type of shooting I use either the Miller Sprinter II CF legs, or Miller Solo 1505 spreader-less CF legs.

O'Connor 2060HD works like a dream with a full R1 setup.

+1 on the 2060 HD Mitchell head with 150 bowel adapter and tiedown. We used Sachler 2 stage CF legs with Mitchell plate. Much more flexible set up for using dollies etc.

For an optimo 24-290 ypu'll want heavy duty aluminum legs. We rent those as needed.
