  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

tripod for scarlet rig

Thanks for the input Peter but the vinten is rated at 22lbs and manfrotto at 29.
How was your experience with it ?

I bought an e-image tripod as an experiment in light weight run and gun technology, and it has been my go to tripod ever since. The 75mm ball 33 pounds payload $700 dollar one with mid level spreader works great. Even a shoot on square front anamorphics was no problem. Love it and it's dirt cheap. just for reference I also own -

Mini Worral gear head -mitchell base
Cartoni c20s 100mm ball
Pearson balanced fluid head (like a weaver steadman) - mitchell base
Some other older Cartoni head 100mm ball

+1 for the Cartoni. We use one on our Scarlet rig and it is fantastic. The spreader on the Manfrotto legs is also terrible.

i have the 509HD, but went with the 536 legs (super light weight).....the 509 is a beast.

I am very happy with the Miller 55 and HD CF legs I recently purchased for use with my Scarlet ... Especially with the 18 to 85 RPZ

I have the 509 head and am really happy with it. But if you have a place nearby, take your scarlet along and try some on for size. After trying some for the past few months, I've found that 'personal taste' plays a huge part in it.
My only lesson learned with any camera gear: The cheaper you go, the quicker you'll want to replace it.

What are the main differences between the Cartoni Focus hd and the Manfrotto 509hd?
When reading their specifications they seem very similar.

+1 for the Cartoni. We use one on our Scarlet rig and it is fantastic. The spreader on the Manfrotto legs is also terrible.

Agreed...as well, the locking mechanisms aren't reliable and get loose...we had a 509 leg collapse and dump an 8 pound camera to the ground last year...of course tightening the locks would've helped, but there's something unreliable feeling about the design of the 509...

Manfrotto 509HD Head feels good enough for up to 40 pound set-up (actually feels like it could handle more). Rock solid and huge. Counter - balance works very good. Can't say the same about existing aluminium legs - they feel to be a bit "slim", but OK... If I get chance to get REALLY heavy duty carbon legs for 100mm bowl (even used) for descent price (not Manfrotto, sorry) I'll do it :) Maybe in 6 moths - or so. Carbon tubes pricing goes down this days - will be much more affordable within a year or so.
