Disney/Fraunhofer/Arri are testing out a system that uses one main camera to capture the image, and two small cameras that capture depth info, which is then processed by Fraunhofer software to produce 3D images.

I've yet to see a view-synthesis method that can render a stereo pair from a 2D + depth map with properly drawn occlusions. That information is just plain missing - and no amount of content-aware filling, blurring and warping can bring it back.
