  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Travelling with the Red One

Carnets pose a different question. Ideally yes you should have a carnet if you're carrying a large camera package overseas for a film project. Getting a visitors visa and getting a carnet for Professional Goods for Exhibition is a way that many film-makers get around applying for work Visa's and the ensuing bureaucracy. Otherwise you can get caught up in Customs hell as I have on a few occasions - having to pay import duties or signing all kinds of promissary notes -etc. But just carrying a camera body in a carry-on and a few accessories in a suitcase, I've avoided many of those issues.

No problem at all!!!

My RED has traveled to places like Cuba, Beirut, Mumbai, Montevideo just to name a few. There has never been a problem as long as you've done your paper work correctly and have a production company at the destination helping you out.

As for security they look at it and see it's a camera, that's all.

Just got it. 1510

Thank you guys. I just got back to Ghana with RED 2053. No problems at all with the authorities.

Pros:
At the Raleigh airport I had to put the RED in the plastic container which then went through the normal security X'ray. They then took the RED to another X'ray on the side and after checking it there handed it back to me. No raised eyebrows. No questions asked. I got the feeling that they have seen a few REDs before.

Cons:
I think the RED is becoming 'common'.

Some countries require carne some don't check with the specific dest. country's office in US. If no carne be sure to take your gear to US customs before departure and have it with a list of all gear piece by piece with Sn's Have them stamp docs. to guarantee getting back in US. Usually no problem but if they decide any is imported can be a hassle.
This is esp. true if some of your aks are stamped made in germany etc....

PS just RED to Mexico totally under the radar for a bunch of scenics.

The 1510 is a nice case, but at 13 pounds empty it is well over any airline's carry-on allowance once you put just about anything into it!

...what he said...we tried many versions of a "stripped down" package and could not get a basic package (i.e. battery, lens, body, LCD or viewfinder) to get under the carry on weight restrictions.

baggage for 30 flights in 45 days. not a single problem.

carnet is a must if you are taking it out of the country.

we used swit batteries and carried them on broken in half...which then is like a bunch of laptop batteries. TSA allows it...for now.

We found that even in countries that don't officially recognize Carnets, they still knew what they were and at the very least understood that we were knowledgeable travelers who knew the law and were not to be messed with.

Often just the fact that you have a very detailed list of your gear that has been sanctioned by an official body (the carnet people) is enough to help you in any country.

Hello, are you a resellers or something that? Do you have any picture of Pelican 1620 case with red inside. Many thanks. Nicola

So those of you that are carrying-on your REDs are you checking all your lenses and accessories?

From my understanding carnets are good for one year? How are these fees calculated and what is a typical fee?

When I entered Morocco about 2 two years ago I was held up at customs for over a day. My tripod pelican case gave it away and I was traveling with an XL-2. The only reason I got through was because I was meeting Morocco's best surfer who the King was fond of. But, once they saw the pelican it was a mess for me.
