Anyone had issues with travelling with RED ONE as a carry-on baggage on planes? Any negative experiences? I would like to travel with my RED ONE and would like to know if there are any restrictions, etc. Thanks

Not a carry-on experience but, when my camera was shipped back to me from Miami, three of the kip levers were snapped off in the nylon/foam divided case. I suggest removing all kips during shipping unless you have a form-fitting foam setup.

I meant any experience with the authorities? The RED looks kinda different from other REDs.. Thanks

Carried on a bunch of times in a Pelican 1510 case with padded dividers. I had six lenses, lots of cbales, top mount and 12" carbon rod. Every single time, TSA takes it out, oggles it, and sends me on my way. About five minutes extra through security. No battery with me, though.

we just got back from 3 weeks on the road in 3 countries with 2 reds; also had to put batteries in our carry-on bags. security opened up our stuff, checked it, and let us through. one was in a porta brace, other in a big backpack. i found its still the same ol' hassle as with any big camera and all the gear.
sure love that camera.

I brought my RED ONE with me from Miami to Caracas as a carry-on item, the camera body wrapped in a towel and the 18/50mm zoom in a little bag, and was allright.
The autorities at the Miami airport were quite amused with the object, and they asked me question about the new technology.....
The accesories arrived as luggage with nothing amiss.
Cheers

I carried-on 4 flights with the RED in a portabrace Carry-on soft case. Most went great. The security would just ask me; "thats a camera, right?" and that was it.

Here is the highlight though:

On a united airlines flight from CO to SD on a smaller jet (I think it was a smaller "air bus" series) The flight attendant told me at the gate "That carry-on is not going to fit on this plane, we are going to have to check it". "No way!" I said. So I got them to let me bring it on and of course it didn't fit on the undersized-overhead compartments. So a "nice" flight attendant saw me trying to make it fit and wanted to help me, she said it would fit under the seat of the emergency exit seats. She took the bag and placed it under the seat, THAN SHE PROCEEDED TO PUSH HER HIGHHEELS INTO THE CASE TO PRESS IT UNDER THE SEAT! By the time I said "Stop" she had already pressed it under. "Oh! Was it fragile?" she asked. "Yes. You just kicked $30k worth of camera under a seat". The other passengers cringed with me.

I was scared to open the bag so I waited until we arrived, and luckly... nothing was majorly damaged. (The back focus needed to be adjusted but other than that, everything made it ok)

bottomline: smack a flight attendant for me on your next flight.

My biggest problem to date is being stopped before I check all my gear or after reclaiming it at baggage claim -

"Is that the RED?"

Not really a problem.

Other thing is the extra charges for the numerous cases and over weight case.

Checked, carried on and shipped.

Shipping presented the biggest problem as customs gets involved.

The only thing to watch out for is the batteries. Some agents might get anal about them.

"Security check on 1."

For carry-on bags, after going through the x-ray, be ready to have your camera case called out for inspection. I had my camera and accessories (especially the carbon x rods) wiped for explosive residue.

I've traveled a bunch with my RED in carry on, no issues with the camera itself (although, make sure it fits in the overheads, and try and make it look light going through customs).

Also, just make sure you have the receipts/rental agreements with you. The only issues I've had were with customs officials claiming import duty in remote locals, but with the right paper work you're golden.

Any customs problems in general?

Do you need a Carnet? I've heard stories from people who traveled with film cameras + lenses + accessories. Don't know if RED is different.

I haven't flown with gear in a few years but I did so for 15 years and almost always got asked to turn the camera on and the customs guy would look thru it to make sure is was in fact a camera and not some B movie killing machine....so yeah it had to be batteried up and ready to go....sounds like they are not asking for that anymore....that's about the only good thing I've heard about travelling with gear since 9/11

hong kong, dubai, amsterdam, london, maimi, chicago, reno x 10, orlando, vegas, kenya, tanzania (africa) {Kilimanjaro, zanzibar, serengeti}, new york city, houston, austin, dallas, peru, brisbane AUS, sydney AUS...of course los angeles, burbank and long beach.

not one problem, and we used to fly with the batteries until about feb 08...tsa and out of country security love the camera, they think it looks sooo cool.

good luck.

Depending on the airline, batteries can be an issue. Keep an eye on all of your gear during the TSA inspection. I had a TSA agent remove everything from my hand carry bag which included my Red, cables, drives, and two lenses. They failed to put two cables back when they brought it back from the "bomb" inspection. The miracle of it was that TSA has a "lost and found" for all of the stuff that does not go back in the bag. When I returned to LAX they had my cables! They sent me to a place on Century Blvd. No name on the door. There were many irate passengers looking for their watches and other personal things. While in the lobby of the TSA place they had a showcase of all the things people had tried to carry on board. In the showcase were hand grenades, samurai swords, switch blades, hand guns and other such devices. Can you imagine trying to hand carry a hand grenade? Now I know to double check all of my hand carry items once they finish inspection. I have traveled around the world many times without problems but the world has changed since 9/11. I learned my lesson.

Hi,

Sounds like the lens was still mounted, thats a very bad idea when travelling.

I've carried numerous cameras carry-on all over the US and India and never had any problems. On one occasion, I had to take it out and show security the sensor to help them understand it was a camera but never any real issues.

Cheers,

Rob
