I am going to be traveling a bit starting the end of the month. I would like some input as to have to pack, haul and have all equipment arrive safely through International travel. Specifically I am looking for info on maximum size Pelican (or equal) cases used to bring tripods, sliders etc. What is your experience with both carry on and checked?

Also, tips on battery packing and disclosure to airlines, what to bring to support the Epic in the field and teaching point stories from those who are well traveled. Really anything that related to traveling with RED equipment abroad.

All input is greatly appreciated!

Have heard many countries require equipment Carnet's (docs) listing gear, value, etc. with the presumption you will not be importing/selling it there. There are companies that streamline this process, but worth checking on. Costs $$ of course, but beats an equipment seizure at their Customs...

I recently had to get a Carnét to travel to Canada. I was bringing in about $165k worth of gear. Carnét cost about $700. Customs was a breeze. I'm probably heading to Austin to shoot a little film soon. The Epic will be in a Pelican Rollaboard. I dunno what to do about my Panchros.

I carry my Epic on my back, Think Tank makes some nice bags, as well as Lowe pro. I hate to check them, lost luggage is no fun on a shoot. I haven't done the carnet, probably because the gear is not checked and I carry it like a tourist or at least a photojournalist. Of course traveling is getting easier with the Epic and Canon mount and lenses.

Lowe Pro X300. I carried a complete Red One package plus a DSLR and lenses all the way to Curacao as carry on. Granted I was in first and business class, United Premier Exec, but if it fits the overhead compartment, it goes. Also, the inner sleeve zips out and makes like a back back. Crappy straps, but it will get you onboard smaller planes - e.g. from Curacao to Bonaire - and fits under the seat. Then you gate check the roller part and stuff any extra items (like your regular backpack) into it. Awesome!

Heh. Funny story. I was coming back from a shoot on Etna, taking Easyjet from Catania to London. They have a strict policy - *one* carryon only allowed, plus sundry other items including 'a camera'.

Arrived at the gate with my standard rolling carryon with clothes and bits & pieces - and a huge humongous bag (actually a range bag - the biggest Sig Sauer make!) containing... a Red One, with 17-50mm, battery, drive, rails, side handles etc attached, fresh from shooting Etna. Got stopped - 'hey only one bag allowed!'. 'Plus a camera, right? This is a camera'. <opens bag containing nothing but the R1> 'Bloody hell... ok that's a camera, it's taking the piss but it's a camera, on you go!'
