  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Travel with Epic

So, I was stressed when getting on the plane because I was last in boarding. If all the space was taken up in the storage bins then they would have had to put my EPIC under the plane. If that would have happened I would have tried to pay someone to let my bag stay up in the bin. Has anybody ever had to check their EPIC down below? I would be worried about theft as much as damage because they don't let you lock the pelican case.

I hold it "Hostage" with batteries. If they don't want you to repack all of your batteries they aren't legally allowed to check your carry-on and will (I assume) force someone to gate-check a roll-on.

First thing about traveling with an EPIC, NEVER CHECK IT IN, always have it as a carry on, second... Don't use the Pick n' Pluck foam inserts, this foam tends to let out a TON of Foam Dust Particles, that get in to the inside of your Camera and lenses, so DON'T USE IT!!

This is how I travel, the Master Primes have been temporarily replaced by Ultra Primes till our Leica Summilux Cine Primes get here, and the LARGE Peli case with Atom 3D rig goes under of course... ;)

Good point Gavin about the LiOn batteries, the TSA rules in USA makes you carry them in the cabin.

Some of the people I fly with have these high Frequent flier status, they get to board first so I just go on with them, if you are travelling together some carriers let you board together. It has worked the last few trips.

There are TSA approved locks now available at luggage departments. I don't know if they are able to be used with all International travel but I know a guy who uses them with no issues. For Domestic US travel, Southwest has great media rules, very generous last time I checked. The media exceptions work as well as the knowledge of the people who check you in, it always helps to have copies of the Airlines policies when checking in. I have had some Airlines want me to prove I was working media with a press pass, fail. Others just want you to show that you make your living with a camera.

The one with the 2 EPIC is the LowePro back pack, The Tracker with a back space for the 17" Laptop, discontinued, but can still be found, the other with the Master Primes is the ThinkThank V2 Airport International, I have them both as carry one.

So I traveled to Detroit and back this weekend with the 1510 pelican and a backpack with my lenses bubble wrapped inside. No problems at all!!!! Matt, thanks for the tip on "media" travel policies, that helped with the tripod I had.

Ketch- What type of soft bag do you have there with your epics/lenses?
