  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

For all the people who plan on buying a RED or already have bought one; what is the most sensible way of transporting your camera overseas? The airport staff tend to be a 'little ruff' on the suitcases. So how could you transport the camera without breaking it apart (more then it is intended)? Can a pelicancase handle the pressure and stuff or should you have it in your handback or will the handback be too big?
 
Yes. I recently travelled with my Red. Checked in a Pelican with all the sturdy stuff and carried the body and lenses on board with me. On most of the flights I had it in a padded rolling bag, but when they chose to weight my carry on I had to just carry it bare as the camera itself is the entire carry on allowance!

Also, the laws regarding batteries has changed. Anything over 100watt hours (the Red batteries are 140) cannot be packed in luggage and you can only hand carry two.

If you are travelling alone you are screwed simply due to carry-on weight since the camera takes it up. But if you have two people you should be okay.

I brought three batteries across two people and didn't have any trouble.

Is that an international policy? If RED makes those little 12V batts for the Epic maybe that will be an (albeit probably Expensive) workaround.

Only other option would be to shell out for a business class/first ticket, as you get more carry on. Is the 2 batt limit a weight thing or numbers thing?

We did just get stung for extra postage on a replacement brick from RED because it was classed as hazardous goods or some such thing.
 
we're bringing a storm case with all the accessoires, the body goes into hand carry luggage.

are you guys using TSA locks? are they worth something?

I just took to RED’s to Japan and checked them. They were in foam packed pelican cases and did just fine. I would keep the drives in my carry-on bags. I would hate for some TSA fool to want to open them.

I've got the Airport Security version from Think tank and it's very nice. I need to weigh my current packing job and make sure I'm not exceeding the limits.

The cases were well laid-out so they didn't move much but I was missing 2 screws from one of the drives hines my point of keeping them in the carry-on. I had way to much gear to carry the cameras It was like 9 cases when it was all said and done :head_explode:

They wouldn't let you carry on 9 cases? You might need to look into using a new airline. I've never had an issue on my private jet. They let me carry on whatever I need to. :sifone:
