  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Random question... has anyone experimented with using a high powered leko, like a src4 750w, to project a colored image on a building? I'm guessing you'd need to get high heat gelatin, though i'm not sure if the focusing mechanism on them would enable a gel that's sitting in the accessory tray to become in focus?

The goal is to project an image on a wall about 20' away. Originally they wanted a moving image, but I'm afraid that most affordable projectors would simply be too dim.

Ive never tried it but I use my lekos all the time to back light objects with gels and the throw is still pretty far.

By coloured image, do you mean a colour gel in front of a Leko with a metal gobo? I'm pretty sure a colour gel at the gobo plane will burn through almost instantly even the High Temp stuff.

You can get special glass gobos which can be printed with an image for projection purposes. Lee, Rosco and other manufacturers will make custom glass gobos for you - just google them.

I mean literally a high resolution image, like of an actual photograph. Can Lee and Rosco do that?

I've not done it myself, so not sure what each particular manufacturer can do. However, googling, Rosco and others can do hi-res photos.

Bear in mind that leko optics are probably not as good as a decent projector, so you may well get colour fringing and other lens aberrations - probably not a problem at the distance you'll be projecting onto a building though.

We have done few projects which included building mapping. I suggest first checking out rental prices for a large venue projector to see if it fits the budget.

I have worked on projects where they have synced 2 projectors together to give the needed output.

You would want to use a Jo-leko and a special made image gobo

ETC makes a high optical quality lens tube for the Source Four, branded as EDLT. They help with sharpness of a projected image and minimize (though don't reduce) chromatic aberration.
