  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stupid question, but does the transcode time out of RedCine vary accordingly depending on the resolution of the source footage? For example, would footage shot at 2k take half as long as 4k to transcode to PAL (assuming there were no file transfer bottlenecks of course).

64 views? C'mon guys, it's a simple yes/no question. I only have access to 4k footage so I can't confirm it myself.

Resolution does matter quite a bit, but decode quality is also a huge factor.

And by decode quality that is the debayer quality correct? I can confirm that a "full" debayer takes a LOT longer than a quarter.

In REDrushes we have a drop down for debayer to choose quarter, full and half.

But in RedCine there's 2 options on the output tab: There's process: draft, standard and full. As well as Quality: minimum, low, normal, high, maximum. Which if these in RedCine is the debayer and what does the other mean?

It would be nice if these RED apps could standardize on their terminology.

I've done detailed benchmarking. In full quality it takes 2.52 times longer to export 4k than 2k.

The testing was done on a dual quad core Mac although I'd guess that both 2k and 4k processing would be proportionately longer on a slower machine.

Process in RedCine = DeBayer in RedRushes.

Quality only has to do with Quicktime, and if you'll notice doesn't exist on the other output format selections.

Thank you for the replies.

Those findings do have some pretty significant budget implications for the post workflow, especially for longform projects and us sorry users still running PowerPC macs. That could be the difference between a fortnight or a month of converting on projects with hours of footage. I think for most commercial work I'd recommend shooting at 2k 16:9 simply to avoid the transcode times.
