Transferring RedCode

I'm going to embark on a project this summer and I'm hoping to use the new Scarlet, but first I have some concerns with the data.

I will be doing my filming on the "road" so to speak, and cannot store/edit until I'm done with my journey. What I'm hoping to do is transfer the data from HD --> laptop --> portable HD, and then mail that HD back to my home base.

Here are my questions/concerns:

1. What do my laptop specs need to be for simple transferring of RedCode data? Can it be done through USB 2.0 or do I need firewire?

2. Does the RedCode transfer well, and is there certain software I need in order to transfer it properly?

3. What is the approximate record times for the Scarlet on the highest resolution setting (which I probably won't be using) for the side CF module?

Thanks for the help in advance.

By transferring, do you mean just copying the data from a REDDRIVE? Any laptop that has USB2/Firewire will be able to transfer the files.

Are you referring to transcoding, which is taking the Redcode files and converting it to another format? In this case, there are RedAlert and RedCine which are available on the Red site, but you're going to want a heavy duty machine if you have a lot of footage. There are also commercial editing packages which are able to read the Redcode directly.

No record times have been quoted, but we are told Scarlet will shoot Redcode42 - average data rate of 42MB/s. If we assume a 16GB CF Card it comes in at just under 6 minutes.

At this time I only want to copy the data. So that's good.

Thanks for the help.

If you're using the 1/8" SSD Module it can record at RedCode100.

And if you're mailing portable hard drives to your house from the road, I would suggest keeping a backup hard drive (or two) with you in case anything happens when mailing. You don't want to lose a day's work of footage because the mail man didn't see the word FRAGILE on the box.
